| ‘Avoid stir, declare CU in Jammu’ | | | MUNISH GUPTA Jammu, Aug 4: As the team of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah returns from New Delhi with no positive signals to be shared with public, the Central University Andolan Samiti –a conglomerate of several organizations –today toughened its stand declaring that nothing short of establishment of Central University in Jammu region will satisfy their legitimate demand. Taking stock of the situation arising over the controversy on establishment of CU, the Samiti today appointed four co-conveners of the CUAS namely Ved Raj Wazir, senior advocate, Daleep Singh Jamwal, President of JUTA, Dr Narinder Singh, President of Teachers Association of SKUAST and Pushwinder Singh Manhas, a student leader, to strengthen their amalgam of about 25 organizations. “CUAS will not let its anger and may go for vigorous agitation in Jammu to achieve our ultimate goal to establish Central University in Jammu”, stated Convenor Central University Andolan Samiti (CUAS) Justice Paviter Singh, He alleged that State Government is creating confusion to appease the Kashmiris who have been even satisfied with Indian Institute of Management (IIM). He, however, out rightly rejected two campuses theory of Central University by saying that it will be unacceptable for Jammu. “An intelligentsia has been working in Kashmir Valley which didn’t want equal or better for Jammu that is why it forced the government to take anti-Jammu decision and maneuver things to appease Kashmiris”, he alleged and maintained that against such intelligentsia Centre has adopted casual and weak approach He demanded immediate establishment of Central University at Samba in Jammu province as already announced by the Government of India and Minister of Human Resources and Development. “Notification to acquire the land at Samba already identified may be issued immediately without any loss of time and Office of Vice Chancellor of Central University along with its staff should be shifted to Samba District for establishing the University”, Singh demanded further. Commenting on role of Central Government over this issue, the Convener said that Central Government had already sanctioned the Central University for Jammu and IIM in Kashmir. The state government which has been creating confusion forced the Jammuities to launch another agitation, he added. On the occasion, Singh said that CUAS will go to leaders, MLA, MPs, ministers, political parties to appeal them to support the CUAS for the cause of Jammu which has been neglected from last 62 years. Alleging harassment of students leaders by the police, Paviter Singh warned the Government and administration to desist from harassing the students peacefully demanding the establishment of CU already announced by the Prime Minister a year back. Central University Andolan Samiti is a peaceful and non political movement to safe guard the dignity and honour of the people of Jammu, he mentioned. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tuesday committed its support to a campaign for the opening of a Central University in Jammu region instead of Kashmir valley. "Our party will fully support the cause of opening the Central University in Jammu region" BJP state unit Chief Ashok Khajuria told reporters here. Khajuria said the manner in which all the elected representatives of Congress and National Conference have been reacting and behaving towards the issue of Central University it becomes clear that they have completely surrendered before the Kashmiri leaders to protect their chairs. "It is very unfortunate", Khajuria said adding the people of Jammu region will not spare all those who are not supporting the cause of people of Jammu region. Urging upon the legislators of the ruling alliance to clear the air as to which political party is supporting shifting of Central University campus from Jammu to Kashmir, Khajuria said people of Jammu region are watching and witnessing dual policy of coalition partners with patience before giving their own verdict. Questioning the motive behind the demand of setting up of two Central Universities in the state, the BJP chief said instead of focusing their attention on setting up of already sanctioned Central University in Jammu the state leadership is deliberately confusing the matters by raking the issue of two Central Universities. He said it is yet another example of discrimination with the people of Jammu region. He said, "BJP extends full support to all the programs to be undertaken by the Central University Andolan Samiti as BJP cannot remain as silent spectator. The party has asked all of its MLAs and party leaders to remain active in their respective constituencies as Jammu has to give big blow again to the temperament which is against Jammu. Various student bodies have been holding a series of demonstrations demanding immediate opening of a Central University in the Jammu region. "We will not let the location of University shift from Jammu. We are ready for an agitation, if required, after the completion of the Amarnath pilgrimage," said Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti (SAYSS) that had spearheaded a two-month-long protest last year for restoration of government land to the Amarnath Shrine Board. In the meantime the JKNPP working committee in its meeting held here the chairmanship of Balwant Singh Mankotia has resolved to organize protests, dharnas and demonstrations on August, 8 at District and Tehsil level in support of the demand for establishment of Central University in Jammu and IIM in Kashmir as already announced by the Prime Minister. Prof. Bhim Singh, Chairman of the party, who was also present in the Working Committee meeting, said that Central University was a right of the people of Jammu.
