Rs 3090 lakh jail modernisation work underway

SRINAGAR, AUG 5 – Advisor to Chief Minister, Mr. Mubarak Gul has said that the Chief Minister Mr. Omar Abdullah is very keen to improve the living conditions in all the jails throughout the state.
This was given in a meeting convened by the Advisor to the Chief Minister Mr. Mubarak Gul here today to take stock of the problems being faced by the inmates of the jail.
The meeting among other was attended by Director General Prison, Dr. Ashok Bhan.
In the meeting it was revealed that a paper which sets targets and priorities for improving the functioning of Prisons Department has already been prepared and submitted to the government. The paper identifies areas that require immediate attention of the government and the Prison administration.
It was also given that a scheme for modernization of the Prisons in the state was launched by the Government of India in 2002-03 which was to be concluded during 2008-09. The outlay under the scheme for the state was Rs 3090 lakh, with 75 percent central share and 25 percent state share. Out of 121 works proposed to be executed, 59 works were completed in toto, 50 works and 12 works are being taken up shortly. The total expenditure incurred on executing these works worked out to Rs 2874 lakh.
In the meeting Mr. Mubarak Gul instructed the Director, Health Services Kashmir to immediately post one Lady Doctor and one Psychiatrist to Central Jail, Srinagar. In addition one ambulance shall also be placed at the disposal of the Director General Prisons out of overall strength of ambulances of the Valley. It was also decided that medical camps shall be held in the jails regularly, besides, the Legal Aid Authority shall be made functional in respect of jails and the department of Handicrafts shall post Handicraft Teachers in the jails.
The Advisor asked the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution department to ensure regular supply of rations to the Jail department. He instructed the Deputy Commissioner, Baramulla to immediately get the drinking water facilities for Baramulla jail augmented, besides one hand pump be also sanctioned for the jail.
