EARLY TIMES REPORT
Rajouri, Aug 5: For the newly coming up Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, which has always been crying for inadequate state funding, Wednesday was a day worth Rs 6.5 Crores and a roadmap to national recognition when a visitor happily announced to pay it all after the varsity showcased its academic and research stockings.
Imagining a high profile Union Minister like Jairam Ramesh in remote mountainous ridges of Rajouri was not quite easy, but Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University’s Center for Biodiversity has in a short span of time carved out a niche in the country which can attract anyone who had idea of the subject and its global importance. The Union Minister for Environment and Forests was therefore no exception and, being aware of the subject, his getting enamoured with what all he saw not quite unexpected.
The cash starved University, therefore, made its day well. Jairam announced setting up of Mahatma Gandhi National Chair for Environment and Ecology at Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University and promised for it a corpus fund of Rs 1.5 Crores. What exactly impressed the Minister was the University’s biodiversity park. He took the liberty of naming it at his own choice and also paid for it.
On his visit to Rajouri, Jairam Ramesh was accompanied by the J&K Minister of State for Forests Shabir Ahmed Khan and Congress Member Parliament for Jammu-Poonch Madan Lal Sharma. Lauding the efforts of BGSBU Vice Chancellor Masud A Chaudhary in building an institute of national repute in short span of time and out meager resources, Jairam advised the Minister of State and the MP to take up the cause of the University for regular grant-in-aid with the State Government that will provide fillip to the technology oriented programmes which the University is running. “Vice Chancellor has already done which beyond anyone’s capacity of imagination but it also responsibility of elected representatives of the area to help in his initiates”, Jairam remarked.
While making announcement for Mahatma Gandhi Chair, the Minister said it will be a humble tribute to Gandhi whose concept of environment has become global philosophy and policy for conservation of nature and natural resources. The Minister threw light on Gandhi’s views on the fundamental unity running through all the diversity we see around us.
He elaborated Gandhi’s awareness about interdependence of species, perils of environmental pollution, loss of plant and animal species and overexploitation of bioresources. Jairam Ramesh commended the University for the Excellent Work it has been doing on different aspects of environment, particularly biodiversity. He expressed confidence that institution of the Chair in Centre for Biodiversity Studies will help in bringing to focus Gandhian thought on environment which has not received the attention it deserves. He lauded the Centre for the broad approach it has adopted in addressing the problems of Environment, which is the need of present times.
Earlier, welcoming the Union Minister the Vice Chancellor of BGSB University, Masud Chaudhary said that over the years the concept of peace has changed. He said, peace is not only end of war, it means end of violence not only against human beings but violence also against plants, animals and the abiotic components of ecosystem, because together they constitute our life support system.
The Minister evinced keen interest in the University Biodiversity Park spread over 470 acres of land. He christened it formally as the Pir Panjal Biodiversity Park and Stated emphatically that in not too distant future it will be raised to the status of National Biodiversity Park and funded appropriately. As a first step, the Minister announced financial assistance of Rs 5 crores for the Park earlier during his address.
