Jammu Aug 06
The National Conference led coalition government plans to hold Panchayat and civic elections somewhere in the middle of next year, highly placed officials sources said.
Official sources said that the issue of holding Panchayat elections had figured briefly during the cabinet meetings but it was decided to postpone the exercise because of unfavorable security scenario. They added that the Government will remain busy with the current budget session of the state legislature till the middle of next month. And it would not be feasible for holding the Panchayat elections in late autumn as most of the regions in state will witness snow fall while Ladakh region will get cut off from the rest of the country because of the closure of only road link due tio heavy snowfall at Zozilla Pass.
Under the civic elections the polling will be held in a phased manner in two major corporations in Jammu and Srinagar and then in municipal committees and Town area Committees (TACs).
Sources said that in view of the Government's plan of holding the elections to Panchayats and municipal committees the ruling coalition decided not to impose a dose of additional taxes in its budget proposals.
