| Thousands bid tearful adieu to Ram Sahai, | | Police confirm suicide, probe inconclusive | | Early Times report Jammu, Aug 6: The Jammu Police have confirmed death by suicide of leading business leader Ram Sahai even as the exact ‘family trouble’ the purported cause behind extreme step, is being looked into. Meanwhile, the moral remains of widely respected businessman Sahai were consigned to flames here this evening in a funeral that was attended by thousands of his admirers and leaders from different sections of life. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and a number of his cabinet colleagues, including Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand, offered floral tributes before Sahai’s body was consigned to flames. The funeral procession left from his Trikuta Nagar residence for Jogi Gate crematorium on banks of Tawi River and enroute thousands of people. As a mark of respect to the departed business leader, the local traders and shopkeepers pulled their shutters down for most of the day. Ongoing investigations in to the mysterious death of Sahai have revealed that Ram Sahai visited one of the branches of a private bank in Bahu Plaza area where he operated his locker and reportedly picked his revolver before driving down to Chamber house. Senior bank officials also confirmed that Sahai visited the bank around noon and operated his bank locker for a brief duration. Sahai reached his office chambers in a confused state of mind and statements recorded by the police on the basis of questioning of Sahai’s driver and security guard clearly indicate that sitting in his office chamber Sahai was behaving differently and was not his usual self. Another key information gathered by the investigating officers revealed that sitting in his office chamber Ram Shahi had prepared an inventory of properties and signed different cheque books. After finishing this job he is believed to have written his suicide note on the back side of a print out of an email. Highly placed sources confirmed that a visibly disturbed Sahai was tense due to reasons best known to him for last couple of days. He also did not attend phone calls either on his mobile or landline number during his brief stay in the chamber house before he reportedly shot himself dead from point blank range on his right temple. The suicide note recovered by the police from inside the dustbin of the office chambers of Ram Sahai holds the key on provocation which led to his death under mysterious circumstances. It is also learnt that for last few days Ram Shai was making inquiries from senior officers on how to change title of the ownership of the plot. He owned plots in Sidhra besides his business establishments Chief Minister Mr. Omar Abdullah, Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Tara Chand, Minister for Finance Mr. A. R. Rather, Agriculture Minister Mr. Ghulam Hassan Mir, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development Mr. Nasir Aslam Wani, Political Advisor to Chief Minister Mr. Devender Singh Rana, MP Ch. Lal Singh, MLAs, Ch. Mohammad Ramzan, Mr. Rashpal Singh, Mr. Sajjad Ahmed Kitchloo and Mrs. Bimla Luthra, MLCs, Mr. Ajay Sadhotra and Mr. Gulchain Singh Charak, DGP Mr. Kuldeep Khoda, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Mr. Khursheed Ahmad Ganai, Divisional Commissioner Jammu Dr. Pawan Kotwal, IGP Jammu Mr. Ashok Gupta, prominent citizens, businessmen and a large number of people including relatives and friends bade a tearful adieu to the departed soul at the cremation site. In his condolence message, the Chief Minister expressed shock and grief over the untimely demise of Mr. Ram Sahai. He said that he shares the grief of Mr. Sahai’s family and expressed his heartfelt sympathies with the bereaved family. He also prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul. He described Mr. Sahai as a pioneer in supporting the cause of business fraternity in the state as President of Jammu CCI. Born on 15 August 1945, Mr. Ram Sahai was a prominent businessman and social activist known across the state and outside. He was 65 and is survived by his wife, daughter and two sons. He remained associated with various social and business organisations and also served as Chairman of Citizens Cooperative Bank. Presently he was holding the post of President of Jammu CCI for the third time since 2001, Mr. Sahai had gained a reputation of being the popular voice of Jammu especially, the business fraternity. His death has been widely condoled.
