CM seeks expert opinion on decongesting cities

Srinagar , Aug 07- Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah Friday counseled the subject matter specialists in the construction of flyovers and express corridors for evolving a comprehensive strategy to overcome the ever increasing traffic jams in the cities and towns and help manage plying of transport smoothly. “The constant traffic jams and congestion on roads is increasing its magnitude as the number of vehicles on roads swells year after year”, he said and added that a well thought at road network construction plan to deal with this problem is the need of the hour. “This would also help integrate this road network and widen the available path ways for traffic movement”, he added.
The Chief Minister was reviewing the proposed express corridor from Jehangir Chowk to Rambagh Bridge Srinagar and construction of B. C. Road flyover at Jammu.
Omar said that flyovers and express ways have attained considerable importance in the present day construction of road networks and highways. “This technology also helps greatly to smoothen the ply of transport on roads, the thrust of which is increasing day-by-day”, he said and added that in the management of traffic, utilization of modern concepts are necessary.
Abdullah said while government is focusing on the upgradation, improvement and construction of roads across the state, widening and construction of new roads is in progress in the rural areas and the road networks in the urban areas are being upgraded and macadamized to facilitate the plying of traffic and provide better roads.
The Chief Minister said that good road connectivity is also imperative for economic betterment of an area as such government has flagged this sector the important one and concerned departments have been directed to concentrate on providing better road connectivity in the state. “Our rural and remote areas deserve all the more important attention in this respect to open up unconnected and far-off areas for economic activities.
Two Power Point presentations were presented at the meeting regarding the construction of B. C. Road flyover at Jammu and proposed express way corridor from Jehangir Chowk to Rambagh Bridge Srinagar.

The base plan of the proposed B. C. Road flyover envisages a flyover from Maheshpora to Balbinder Chowk to Amphalla Chowk onwards. It also proposes road widening from Shakuntala crossing to flyover making it six lane and construction of 1.40 km road under sub-project. It also envisages 460 meters left limb of flyovers and 1.14 kms right limb flyover. The width of the roads will be 5.5 meters with 1.5 meter footpath. The size of Rehari and Amphalla rotaries will be 20 meters each. It also envisages two bus ways with proper facilities, pedestrian sub-way at Rehari Chowk and traffic island towards New Plot area.
