| Security forces up vigil | | | Early Times Report Jammu Aug 7: The Army and the Border Security Force (BSF) have stepped up patrolling in Jammu and Kashmir along the border with Pakistan to foil possible infiltration by terrorists ahead of India's Independence Day on August 15, officials said Friday. A senior BSF official said on condition of anonymity: "We have stepped up patrolling especially at night to prevent any infiltration by militants from Pakistan." The Army guards the 720 km-long Line of Control (LoC) dividing the Indian and Pakistani administered Kashmir. The BSF patrols 220 km of international border in the Jammu region. A three-tier barbed wire fence has been erected along the border on the Indian side to deter infiltration bids but there are some open points like rivers or rivulets that offer free spaces. The infiltrators have at times even managed to cut the fence to sneak into India. The fence is 500 meters to two kilometres inside Indian territory. An Army official said that air surveillance is also on along the frontier. Meanwhile, militants are reported to have taken advantage of recent protest rallies staged by people in various parts of the Kashmir valley by having not only fortified their positions but by having carved new hideouts also, high placed sources said Senior police functionaries on proximity told that several areas in the valley had been sanitized against militants during the last five years and latest reports had revealed that militants had established their bases in these areas. The police also said that since the security forces remained engaged in handling the protest rallies, engineered by the separatists, militants got an opportunity for sneaking into areas where the terror infrastructure had been demolished. The police authorities also believe that once again Pakistani agencies had become active in assisting small groups of militants in sneaking into Jammu and Kashmir. According to the intelligence agency reports, Pakistani agencies wanted to keep the infiltration exercise on so that Delhi was under pressure for resuming talks with Islamabad. Police said that instructions have been given to the security forces, including the troops have to relaunch operations against rebels wherever they have established their hideouts.
