| Four Artists get National Awards in Calligraphy | | Art Calligraphy on revival in J&K | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Aug 8- An Exhibition of more than 250 rare specimens of Calligraphy was inaugurated here this afternoon at Tagore Hall. The event was organized by Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages in connection with distribution of Awards of All India Calligraphy Competition -2009. The exhibition has witnessed very warm response from all sections of society. Mohammad Yousuf Taing former Director General Culture and MLC was Chief Guest on the occasion while Zaffar Iqbal Khan Manhas, Secretary Cultural Academy presided over the function. In award ceremony held after inauguration of Exhibition, reputed calligraphist of India Mohammad Abdul Ghafoor from Hyderabad was awarded for his calligraphy work. He stood overall first in All India Calligraphy Competition conducted by the Academy. Renowned calligraphist of State Mohammad Shafi’s work was chosen best second for the National Award. The third award goes in favour of Shaheen Parveen of Hyderabad. The calligraphy work of Qari Mati-ullaha of Tonk Rajasthan was also awarded in a special category. In student category Shaheen Khan, Balal Ahmed, Manzoor Ahmed and Mehmoda Begum was awarded by the Academy. Manhas said that since early seventies we are running a State level calligraphy institute here at Srinagar and facilitating the revival of rare calligraphic works through various courses. He said besides scholarships the Academy is providing all facilities to the students, including notebooks, pens, charts, and black ink to the students who are pursuing the three years course for calligraphy diploma. He said we are doing oue best for revival of this centuries old art which is at the verge of extinction. Mohammad Yousu Taing in his address told that it is also true the this art form is at the verge of extinction as very few people come forward to learn it adding that the institutes established by the government which were providing training to the students in the art form have also either closed down or are on the verge of closure. He impressed upon the State government and State Academy to come forward for the rescue of this dying art. Mohammad Ashraf Tak Chief Editor Urdu presented a research paper on the topic “The Art of Calligraphy in Kashmir”. Earlier the Student of Institute of Music and Fine Art presented Kalam-e-Iqbal.
