| Security at JU: | | Left to Gods and fates | | SUMIT SHARMA Jammu, Aug 8: With more than 100 ‘unarmed’ security guards on its staff roll and local Police always on the call, the University of Jammu is emerging as most vulnerable spot in the town where shootouts, attacks with sharp edged weapons, ransacking and rampaging has become a spur of the moment phenomenon. A shootout in the corridors of Vice Chancellor’s office had raised serious security questions but no lessons were learnt. Attack on the staff and ransacking of cafeterias has become order of the day involving some students and large interference of non-student youth who come over for hangouts. Instead of taking immediate corrective measures, the campus administration apparently prefers ‘passing the buck’ exercise. JU Security Officer, Captain SR Dubey says his ‘force’ does not have the powers or equipments to tackle the situation. When Registrar PS Pathania was contacted to comment on the weak security arrangement, he said, “the local Police are here to handle such situations”. With these two opinions coming from the people at the helm of affairs, the JU security is best left to the Gods and fates. The cafeteria contractors, who are always at the receiving end of unruly attacks, have several times have approached the University authorities but there is little which is up for change. On Friday there was an attack inside a cafeteria where property was badly damaged and staff injured. It was not an unforeseen event. Such warnings had already been there but the University could not take any corrective measure. Early Times recently got copy of a latter written by one of the cafeteria contractor to the Registrar complaining of an attack on the cafeteria. While concern of this cafeteria (local in Zorawar auditorium) is yet to be addressed there was attack on another cafeteria on Friday
