| Antony says, upped militant infiltration in J&K worrying | | | Agencies New Delhi, Aug 8 : Indicating further trouble due to recent spurt in incidents of infiltration from Pakistan, Defence Minister A K Antony today said the development was worrisome. Pointing to the fact that reports received from Jammu and Kashmir in the last few weeks indicated a marked increase in cross-border infiltration from the western side of the Indian border, Mr Antony said the development was indeed worrying. Army officials have said there has been a rise in incidents of infiltration in the valley, with more and more groups trying to enter the region, said the Defence Minister here. The Minister was reacting to a query on the recent shooting incident in Kashmir which left two jawans of the CRPF killed in a shootout by militants on August 1. Immediately after the incident, militants again struck at a crowd in Batamaloo area in Srinagar itself, injuring a police constable. The Minister's comments came in the wake of several incidents in recent times when security forces encountered infiltration bids and attacks by militants in Jammu and Kashmir that left nearly 20 dead, including 13 militants and two soldiers, since the beginning of this month. Four infiltration bids were foiled by security forces along the Line of Control (LoC) in which eight militants will killed on August 4. A Hizbul Mujahideen commander was gunned down in the Marmat- Doda region of Jammu division the following day. On August 5, an army soldier and seven Pakistani infiltrators were killed near the Line of Control (LoC) in the frontier district of Kupwara at three different places. The same day another encounter took place between Pak infiltrators and security forces at Tangdhar sector in which three militants were gunned down. A third encounter ensued in Pir Panchal range when militants attacked a security force party, leading to a joint search operation being launched in the forests of Marmat area by the Special Operation Group, Rashtriya Rifles and the CRPF. Army officials have confirmed that all these encounters occurred close to the LoC fence, even as the state police believes that the recent spurt in violence was being done to destabilise the improving law and order situation in the state. The Defence Minister had earlier this week also said terrorists were becoming aggressive by adopting new technologies in their operations.
