New Hindi play ‘Bahu’ written by Tripurari Sharma staged here today under the direction of Balwant Thakur in Natrang’s weekly Theatre show ‘Sunday Theatre’. The show was assisted by Sumeet Sharma.

The play Bahu is set in the rural Punjab where a young lady is shown fighting for her right and the existence. The play opens at a tragic scene, Bahu’s husband has died, the ladies are wailing, gents are mourning but Bahu is not ready to shed tears on this. People are forcing her to have a sigh of the dead body before it is taken for last rites. For her he died much before when he betrayed her and left home for someone else. The life moves on, she confines in her husband’s younger brother (Ram Dutt) and falls in love with him. But the elders in the family are not ready to accept this relation. For the high status and upper cast families their reputation is more important than any thing else. Despite being pregnant, she is shown the exit and a new bride makes her entry in the family. The new bride is loaded everyday with the glorifying stories of the family’s past and the picture of an ideal family is painted in her mind. But this frame slowly fades away when she is exposed to the ground realities. She gets a shock of life when she comes to know that this family has thrown a pregnant lady out of the house for their false exhibitionism and finally leaves them once for ever. Now the family has no other option but to look for the Bahu and her son for the heir of the family. After making rigorous efforts they are able to locate her at a road widening project where she is working as a casual labourer. Repeated pleas fail to impress her and she refuses to be a part of that reputed family. She teaches them a lesson by not allowing her son to be the heir of their family.
