Huge presence of militants suspected in Kashmir forests

Srinagar, Aug 9: Raising alarm bells ahead of Independence Day celebrations, an unspecified number of heavily armed militants is reported to have sneaked into Kashmir valley from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) during the past three weeks.

So far, ten have been killed by the security forces deep into this side in the forest area at different places.

However, defence ministry spokesman was not available to provide details, including the number of militants who had crossed over to this side from POK.

There were conflicting reports about the militants groups who had infiltrated into this side during the past three week from POK. Some reports suggest that seven groups with six to ten militants in each group, while others said a total of about 50 infiltrators had entered this side.

A police spokesman said here this afternoon that Army killed three militants in Vewan forest in Bandipora district of north Kashmir early yesterday.

He said the militants belonged to Pakistan based Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT). Two AK47 rifles, one AK variant, 12 magazines, 300 rounds of ammunition, 11 hand grenades, five UBGL (destroyed), three jacket, three pouch, dry fruit, one first-aid kit, one phone dairy, one rifle cleaning kit and one identity card were recovered from the slain militants.

Seven militants were killed early this week in three different encounters in Kupwara district in the forest area near the Line of Control (LoC). Three soldiers also lost their lives and few others were injured in these encounters.
