| Gul-e-Surkhab brings laurels to Jammu Kashmir | | Becomes 1st Indian woman to get 2 bronze medals in martial arts | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Aug 10: Gul-e-Surkhab, the first Woman IInd Dan Black Belt of the state, has added another feather to her cap by bringing laurels to the state of Jammu and Kashmir and country at large when she clinched two bronze medals in Ist Asian Martial Arts Games-2009 held at Bangkok from August 1 to August 9. Surkhab became the first woman from India and state of Jammu and Kashmir to get two bronze medals in individual events in the Ist Asian Martial Arts Games organised by Olympic Council of Asia. She won the bronze medals in Duo Women and Jujitsu Women events in 62 Kg category. The Jammu girl was selected by All India Jujitsu Olympic Association of India to participate in the games. About 45 countries participated in nine different events at Bangkok from August 1st Asian Martial Arts Games were held in Bangkok, Thailand from August 1, 2009 to August 9, 2009 in 9 sports. Due to Political crisis in Thailand and 2009 Swine Flu, the Bangkok Asian Martial Arts Games Organizing Committee (BAMAGOC) and the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Thailand decided to move the Asian Martial Arts Games from the original schedule of April 25 to May 3. “For me martial arts is above all as I have been giving all of my time for the game”, Gul-e-Surkhab said adding I feel proud to become the first India woman to get two bronze medals in the Asian Martial Arts Games. “I am thankful to the Jujitu Olympic Association of India for giving me the chance to represent my country, state and myself at the international level”, she said adding, “I am looking forward for support from the state of Jammu and Kashmir so that I can contribute my experience towards grooming the young and aspiring youth of the state”. She has also in her credit international best coach besides other achievements including state and national awards.
