| Millions of cases pending in courts, tribunals in India: Vohra | | 2-day international conference on social obligations beings at KU | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Aug 10: Asserting that millions of cases were pending in different courts in India, the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, NN Vohra, on Monday called for reviewing the different statues and laws in a bid to address the new crimes and problems faced by people in the wake of globalization and technological advancement. Addressing the 2-day international conference at Kashmir University, Vohra said, “There are millions of cases pending in India despite the establishment of different courts and tribunals in its different states. So I guess it is required to review the existing statues and laws to address the new problems vis-à-vis crime like cyber crime, abortions, medical negligence, scams, and environmental issues.” The 2-day international conference titled “Law and Social Obligation: The Way Forward” was organized by the varsity’s Department of Law in collaboration with Ahmad Ibrahim Kullyah of Laws, International Islamic University, Malaysia. Vohra, who is also the KU chancellor, said there was need to examine as to why so many cases were pending. “The different social obligations are a result of the collective social conscience of the people over the centuries,” he said, adding that Courts over the years laid down certain principles and laws for the betterment of people. Referring to different principles and amendments in the Constitution, Vohra said it was the duty of the states to apply these principles. “We are faced with newer problems in the wake of technological advancements and the concept of Nation States. So there has been a change in the social obligations as well,” he said. The Chief Justice of K&K High Court, Justice Barin Ghosh, said the concept of the “ruler and the ruled” was vanishing. “The need of the hour is to render social justice,” he said. “The Court System is just a dispute-redress forum. But justice has to be rendered at every state of life. Everyone should do justice to himself and the society within his parameters and the area of his work. Only then social justice can be rendered.” Justice Ghosh dwelt at length over the concept of law and social obligation. “It is our obligation to use knowledge and resources for the betterment of society,” he said, adding the concepts have undergone tremendous change over the years. The Dean, AIKL, Malaysia, Muhammad Akram Shair Muhammad highlighted the achievements and objectives of the institute. “It is a moment of pride for us to have collaboration with the KU,” he said. The senior Law professor, Meraj-ud-Din Mir, highlighted the aims and objectives of the international conference in his welcome address. Senior Law faculty, Prof Farooq Ahmad, conducted the proceedings and presented the vote of thanks. Registrar Kashmir University Prof Syed fayaz , Had department of the Law Prof Altaf Ahmad Mir , conference coordinator Prof A M Mata besides senior professors students , scholars and the members of the civil society.
