| Arrangements for Sankri Mela Discussed | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT UDHAMPUR, AUG 10 : Arrangements for the smooth conduct of 3-day historic Sankri Devta mela starting from August 18, 2009 in village Meer of Block Panchari in district Udhampur were discussed today under the chairmanship of District Development Commissioner, Udhampur, Mr. Ajay Khajuria.
Chief Planning Officer, Udhampur, Executive Engineers of PHE, PDD, ARTO, District heads of Health, Youth Services and Sports, Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Handloom, Handicrafts, Tehsildar Settlement, Advocate and Chairman Shiv-Parvati Cave Shrine Moungri, Mr. Swatantar Dev Kotwal, President J&K Indian Style Wrestling Association, Shiv Kumar Sharma, District Sports Advisory Committee Members, Sham Swaroop Kalsotra, Raj Guru and Local Mela Committee members attended the meeting.
In the meeting arrangements of security, sanitation, medicare, drinking water and power supply and transportation were discussed. It was decided that District Police would deploy adequate security personnel during mela days while ARTO would deploy sufficient number of buses from different locations whereas Health Department would ensure sufficient arrangements of medicare with stand by ambulance arrangements. The DDC asked the Tourism Department to give wider publicity to the historic mela so that maximum people visit the mela site.
Tehsildar Settlement, Udhampur has been appointed as Mela Officer who would keep a strict vigil on the checking of rates and quality of eatables in coordination with officers of departments concerned besides supervising all arrangements of the mela.
Rural sports would be arranged by the Youth Services and Sports Department in which local sportsmen would participate besides organizing cultural programmes. During the first day of mela, the J&K Indian Style Wrestling Association in coordination with local mela committee would arrange a wrestling competition as per past practice.
For the awareness of people about various government sponsored schemes different government departments would setup their stalls.
Speaking on the occasion, the DDC said that Shankri mela has immense scope for attracting visitors from within and outside the state owing to its historic and traditional importance. He urged the mela committee members to come forward in making the mela a grand success as public participation is of great importance in promoting tourism and economy of the area.
