| Steps afoot to improve educational standards in government schools: Minister | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Aug 10 – Minister for Rural Development and Parliamentary Affairs, Mr. Ali Mohammad Sagar, on behalf of Minister for Education, in reply to a question of Mr. Showkat Hussan, MLC informed the Legislative Council today that it is not a fact that the Education system has deteriorated in the State and all the schools are showing poor performances in Annual examination. He said that performance of most of the schools continues to show an upward trend. In the year 2007, 34 schools registered 100% result and in the year 2008, 39 Government Schools registered 100% results in Class 10th. There are some schools which have shown poor performance and the Heads of such institutions and teaching staff concerned is being penalized under rules, he added. The Minister said that steps have been taken to improve the quality of education in the schools which include introduction of refresher programmes and remedial classroom transitions in the schools which are having below 33% results in annual examinations. The concerned Chief Education Officers will seek cooperation of the locals to overcome the problem of non-punctuality of the students which is affecting the performance of schools in far flung and educationally backward areas. Besides, emphasis is also laid on the development of teaching-learning material and to enhance the comprehension of the students, he said. Mr. Sagar said that it has become a status symbol for people in general to admit their wards in private institutions and some Government teachers are also following the practice. In this connection, the government is taking remedial measures to improve the quality of education in the Government schools. Mr. Khalid Najeeb Suharwardy, Mr. Javed Rana, Mr. Vijay Bakaya and Mr. Murtaza Ahmad Khan raised some supplementaries on the subject which were clarified
