Jammu shutdown partial, nearly peaceful

Jammu, Aug 10- Normal life was affected here Monday due to Jammu bandh call given by Central University Andolan Samiti (CUAS)-a conglomerate of social, political and student groups demanding setting up of Central University in Jammu region. The BJP State Chief and MLA Ashok Khajuria were among 30 others arrested during bandh in Jammu City.
The arrests were made after the BJP activists tried to take out a rally in violation of prohibitory orders under section 144 Cr PC, police said. The Police however made elaborate arrangements to avoid any violent incident during the Bandh.
CUAS had given a bandh call after high level talks with the state government failed to yield fruitful results. The state government had made several attempts to pacify the members of the Andolan Samiti to call off the stir while giving assurance but the Andolan Samiti pressed for s written assurance.
In Jammu schools and colleges also remained closed and the attendance in state government offices was very thin as transport and passenger vehicles remained off the roads.
Tourists/pilgrims reaching Jammu en-route Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine and other tourist destinations faced many hardships in the absence of transport services.
In response to the bandh call, shops, markets and commercial establishments remained shut. Though, the Transport Associations opposed the bandh call, hardly a few vehicles plied on the roads. Different social and political parties including BJP had supported the bandh in support of demand of establishment of Central University at Samba at Jammu province. Even Bar Association Jammu (BAJ) also supported Jammu Bandh called by CUAS and suspended the working in High Court and subordinate courts over the Central University issue.
There was partial attendance in the government offices, schools and banks due to strike, officials said.
Central University Andolan Samiti (CUAS) also took out protest procession from Panjtirthi to Geeta Bhawan in order to show anger against the government over the issue of Central University.
The members of CUAS lead by CUAS Convenor (retd) Justice Paviter Singh today assembled Panjtirthi outside Raj Bhawan. Earlier, Police had not allowed the CUAS members to take out protest procession but later district administration allowed CUAS to take out peaceful procession from Panjtrithi to Geeta Bhawan.
Meanwhile, the ABVP activists led by Suresh Magotra and Preety Chaudhary also the member of CUAS staged the protest demonstration outside Jammu University campus and also burnt the tyres . Later some of their activist were arrested by the police.
Before courting arrest, Khajuria while talking to the media persons, said that today’s Jammu Bandh call given by Central University Andolan Samiti (CUAS) is the beginning of a massive and long agitation against the discriminatory attitude of the state government with Jammu.
Khajuria said his party will not let the new institution to be located elsewhere, but at Jammu. "We will not let the project be hijacked elsewhere," he said.
The reports said that the Police have also arrested three persons including BJP State Secretary Yudhvir Singh from the Link Road area in the morning. Sethi along with other party activists was appealing the public to support the cause of Jammu for which the bandh was being observed today.
Later, BJP activists led by BJP senior leader Bali Bhagat attempted to torch the tyres at Kacci Chawani area of Jammu City but they were restrained by the Police.
There were no reports of any untoward incident from anywhere in the city.
The protest rallies of similar kind were witnessed from other parts of province during the day. In Kathua, students held a protest rally in the main Bazar against the dilly dallying attitude of state government towards the Central University issue. The shops and business houses of the city remained closed down for the entire day.
In Udhampur as well, the band call evoked effective response with all the sections of society lending their full support to the call. The shops and schools remained closed for the entire day. Several protest demonstrations were held in favor of the CU in Jammu region.
