| Do'nt ignore CUAS's threat | | | Nirbhay Jammual
Jammu, Aug 12: The Central University Andolan Samiti(CUAS) has threatened to intensify its agitation against delay on the part of the Government in setting up central university in Jammu.Neither the state Government nor the centre seems to become unnerved.The Government thinks that the threat of agitation may not be as violent as it was witnessed during the Amarnath land row.Even when the agitation over the Amarnath land row took birth in Jammu both the state Government and the centre failed to take cognisance of it as they were led to believe that the Jammuites cannot launch a campaign that ultimately shook the nation.The Government commited a mistake during the Amarnath land row and is trying to commit a blunder by not reading the writing on the wall. The Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah,announced in Srinagar recently that he had suggested to the centre to sanction two central universities for Jammu and Kashmir.So far so nice.But if one goes beyond the helpful attitude,if at all it was required,of the ruling coalition one would find that the Congress-National Conference alliance leadership is kidding with the sentiments and aspirations of the people of the Jammu region.
As far as the original plan is concerned the centre had sanctioned central university for Jammu and one IIM for Srinagar. In his address to the joint session of the state legislature in Jammu on March 25 Governor,N.N.Vohra,had stated that one central university and one IIM "shall be established by the central Government in the state."This means that the two institutes were not to be established in the Kashmir valley because the state does mean the regions of Jammu,Ladakh and Kashmir.If the ruling coalition leaders have been trying to get two central universities sanctioned for Jammu and Kashmir it is the result of pressure mounted by various political,social and educational organisations in Jammu that have taken to the streets protesting against the plan of the state Government to hijack the central university project to the valley.
Recently the NSUI leaders had approached the AICC leaders and they announced that the central university would be established in Jammu.Why this confusion is being created?There is only one plausible reason.Since the National Conference is valley centric with strong bases in the Kashmir province it wishes to rake up the central university controversy so that even if it is forced to set up the proposed university in Jammu or succeeds in getting two universities sanctioned it could earn the support of kashmiris.This support it needs because the very foundation of this 71-year old party was being knocked by the PDP,which has assumed the role of a baby elephant.
One main question emerges out of the confusion and conflict having been triggered by the National Conference leadership.If the NC leadership has suggested to the centre that it should sanction two central universities for Jammu and Kashmir why has it not pleaded for two IIMs for the state ?Since the central university had been sanctioned for Jammu Omar\ Abdullah or the Congress leadership in the state have been compelled to seek another university sanctioned for the state.Surprisingly the leadership of the two parties give an impression that they were requesting the centre to sanction two central universities because they are keen to give justice to Jammu.They hide their real intentions.By demanding two central universities they were trying to help Kashmiris.Let us assume that both the National Conference and the Congress are sincere in their quest for securing two central universities for the state why have they not suggested to the centre to sanction two IIMs for the state ? They have not done it because the IIM is to be set up in Kashmir hence there is no political compulsion on the part of the ruling coalition to remove regional disparity. I have no comments on this development.Let people learn to understand the subtlities behind political manoeuvring.
