Early Times Report
Srinagar, Aug 12: Peoples Democratic Party today said the announcement by the government about transferring the investigation into double rape and murder case of Shopian is yet another attempt to cover up the brutality. Reacting to the announcement made by State Finance Minister Ab Rahim Rather on the floor of the house today Party
President Mehbooba Mufti said CBI as an institution had suffered a serious damage to its image of impartiality in J&K as a result of its failure to reach truth in earlier cases like infamous sex scandal. She said that the CBI was being used as a tool to cover up atrocities on the people and the decision is yet another eye wash to bury the truth in Shopian incident.
Earlier, speaking during a debate the PDP President told the legislative Assembly that the government had systematically tried to hush up the case of rape and murder of two young women of Shopian. The cover up attempt had begun with the statement of the Chief Minister himself on June 01 that it was a case of drowning and neither rape nor murder was involved.
Mehbooba Mufti said the administration had take cue from the Chief Minister and tried every thing to prove him correct. The refusal to register an FIR for 10 long days was the first indication of governments pre meditated plan to conceal the truth about the crime,
she said and added the appointment of Jan commission turned out to be a massive fraud on the people of the state and it was most unfortunate that it directed the needle of suspicion to the family of the unfortunate women.
Had it not been for the initiative taken by the High court in response to the public out cry the government, Mehbooba Mufti said, would not have moved even on the destruction of vital evidence. She said to subvert the high courts instructions the government had come up with the same tactics to replace the samples as it had done in pathribal
case during Farooq Abdullah‘s tenure.
Mehbooba said the government has lost all moral authority to claim that it would protect life and honour of people of the state especially the weaker sections among them like women.
The PDP president said the government owed it to its people to ensure justice but it had instead tried to use police only to muzzle people’s voice while investigation was taking a back seat. She said it was part of the government hush up plan to get the samples for DNA testing changed as the earlier Farooq Abdullah government too had used same
tactics in the Pathribal atrocity.
Cautioning government about the changed atmosphere and realities of the state, Mehbooba said the tactics would now face strong resistance from her party and the civil society. She said the government must learn to govern in accordance with law of the land otherwise it would be guilty of reigniting the flames of disaffection and alienation.
