| Employees fall at Govt’s receiving end | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Aug 12: Even as more than three lakh government employees today boycotted their work to press for their pay demands, thousands were made to rush helter-skelter when cops swooped down at them with canes and water sprays foiling a march towards main City Center and the Civil Secretariat area. Following a call of employees for gathering at Lal Chowk, the government had already imposed curfew like restrictions in Srinagar City but still thousands of employees braved the restrictions to take out a march. More than three lakh employees today struck work in the Jammu and Kashmir, demanding full implementation of the sixth Pay Commission. The Government has described the strike as unjustified’ and claimed that most of the demands of the employees have been accepted and implemented. However, the district authorities imposed restrictions under Section 144 Crpc to foil the "Lal Chowk Chalo" march call by the employees of Joint Action Committee to press their demands. Hundreds of employees were taken into preventive custody for violating the restrictions. The strike affected normal work in the Government offices as employees chose to stay away in response to the strike call. The government educational institutions remained closed as teaching and other staff were missing though students had come to attend the classes. However, the students left their homes after they were told about the strike. Thousands of employees took to streets from Shaheedgunj raising slogans in support of their demands. The employees marched through Exhibition crossing, Gantha Ghar and civil line area. However, they were stopped by the police and later hundreds of them were arrested. An official spokesman said keeping in view, the strike call given by the small sections of the employees today, the District Magistrate, Srinagar, Mehraj Ahmad Kakroo has imposed restrictions Under Section 144 Crpc on the assembly of five or more than five persons in territorial jurisdiction of Srinagar district. However, this order shall not be applicable to funerals, cremations and university and board examinations, he added.
