| Reasi in Stone Age, ten districts almost invisible on industry map | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 12: On redrawing of boundaries following creation of eight new administrative units two years back, at least ten districts have left with negligible presence of industrial units in small scale sector. In Jammu province Reasi district, which has its territorial jurisdiction spreading over Katra base town of Mata Vaishno Devi shrine and on side and treacherous mountainous areas like Gulabgarh on other side is apparently in a stone age with not even a single industrial unit to report. Case is almost the same for two newly created districts of Kishtwar and Ramban having two and one industrial units, respectively. As per the report of Economic Survey presented in the Legislative Assembly last week, the Capital districts of Srinagar and Jammu top in the number of registered small scale industrial units. They are closely followed by Kathua, Anantnag and Baramulla districts. The myth that Samba is heavily industrialized district is not true, at least, as far as small scale industry units are concerned. As per the district wise profile of SSI registered units out of total 51165 units merely 236653 workers are employed to earn their livelihood. Successive governments in the state claimed time to time for the streamlining of SSI in almost every district and particularly in far flung areas to generate employment and bring out the hidden talent among the rural population for their socio-economical development. But on the grounds where Jammu leads with having 10015 registered SSI units, followed by Srinagar wherein registered SSI units counts as 9605 and Reasi in Jammu region is lone district having not even a single units registered so far. Kathua has 4842 units, Anantnag 4078 and Baramulla 4020 units. Badgam in Kashmir and Udhampur district in Jammu 3918 and 3875 units, respectively. Soon after the new districts were carved so many facts came to fore as Samba in Jammu region was assumed to be the hub of SSI units as well as industrial sector but as per the figures and facts Samba has just 42 SSI registered units which employee only 712 workers. Other districts which have negligible share in SSI units include Bandipura, Reasi, Kishtwar, Samba, Ramban, Ganderbal, Kulgam and Shopian. But as per the economic survey report out of 22 districts as on today all about 15 districts including Kargil and Leh have negligible share in establishing SSI registered units. Which not only speaks the volumes of concern of the concerned department but also raise questions for the successive governments for their responsibility and accountability?
