| People protest arrest of Imam | | | Early Times Report Baramulla, Aug 13 : Security forces resorted to lathicharge to disperse people near here, who were protesting against the arrest of a priest of a local mosque. As the protestors, demanding release of the priest Mufti Ajaz Ahmad Imam of Baitul Mukaram mosque, tried to block the road at main chowk near here, security forces resorted to lathicharge last evening. Sources said security guards of a VIP, who was passing the area when the protests was going on, fired several rounds in the air to disperse them. The trouble started when the news spread in the town that the Imam has been arrested and booked under Public Safety Act (PSA). Residents of the town took to the streets, raising slogans against the government and police for framing innocent people of the town for participating in the protests on Shopian and other Human Rights violations. Sources said demonstrators and security forces in a local temple also clashed and pelted stones on each other. About a dozen protestors were injured, they said. However, a police handout issued in Srinagar this afternoon, without giving details about the incident, said some miscreants pelted stones at Raghunath temple at main chowk Baramulla where members of pandit community are residing. Police in presence of Tehsildar Baramulla chased miscreants away. Window pans of the said temple got damaged while 15 police personnel got injured. One of the injured constable, who was hit by a stone in the head Mohammad Ramzan was admitted to hosptial here, the statement said.
