| Leaders must set an example to become role model | | | Khushwant. S. Ranial
No society and state can flourish in the absence of a leader because a leader is like a sailor who sails the boat out of storm in a sea. But if a sailor is physically weak, mentally corrupt, holds myopic attitude and poor will-power, then there is no doubt that boat is bound to sink. Likewise, a leader holding short vision and selfish motive can never pull the cart of nation towards her healthy sustainable growth and development. A leader must be morally upright and knowledge wise should not be bankrupt of ideas. A leader must be pragmatist in outlook, naturalist in attitude and idealistic in thoughts and feelings. A leader should possess an ingrained quality of both head and heart to face the most horrible situation and manipulative and calculative to be a good decision maker to respond to stimulus without any break or delay. He must not be an opportunistic to get the profitable results in his favour every now and then. But it is a matter of sadness that present blend of leaders across our entire nation's length and breadth are not possessing enriched qualities to feel boast of, barring exceptional cases like S. Manmohan Singh, PM of India, former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former president of India APJ Abdul Kalam, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi etc. Whenever one sees around, one finds oneself encircled by none other than the sycophants holding glib tongue and chameleon attitude to befool the helpless citizens of this very nation. Thus upon whom, should one repose trust for one's safety, security and prosperity. In the name of development, they are cashing the huge chunk of amount meant for developmental projects through their own contractors, touts and bureaucratic level set up. Thus those who should be taken to task, themselves find in the safer den to roar at will upon the poorer segment of illiterate, poorer section of society. The resultant chaos is the reflection of all this existing mess around us where now one feels very hard to even breathe. The situation is entirely polluted and unsafe. System is in shambles. Only one point programme of filling one's coffin is in air. Thus when the leaders holds such a low profile standards and falls from the ethical principles of governance, then would it not be unjustifiable to expect too much from the commoner bereft of perks and power? A born leader must have the moral courage to accept the reality and subjugate the illegitimacy. But it is found wanting in the leaders of present era. One such example in this regard can be cited in terms of S. Buta Singh, former Union Home Minister, former Governor and presently a chairman of national commission for SC/ST's who is facing irk and fire for his son namely Sarabjot Singh @ Sweety being charged with corruption by the CBI, a premier investigative independent agency. On behalf of his father, Sarbjot Singh has allegedly negotiated a bride deal and assured the excused of exoneration but on the other hand, as expected Buta Singh refuted all such leveled allegations stating that the arrest of his son is nothing but an attempt to deface his stature and his straight forward refusal is nothing but an exposition of ill character of an unending lust of power. On the other hand, our young energetic CM Omar Abdullah has been charged emotionally by his rival groups member for his name in the list of infamous sex scandal-2006, in the ongoing assembly session has further exposed a new low in politics. Such mean act not only created an ugly uproar but also disrupted the proceedings of assembly thus wasting time which otherwise could have been spent on the important issues related to development. Many of these elected representatives through democratic electoral rolls, initially donot hold strong financial background but only one tenure enriches their bank account to such a degree from where it becomes very easy to survive for the whole life without putting on an extra effort. Comparatively to their heightened fate, the plight of their makers (voters) reaches to lowest ebb and become pitiable and worrisome. They go for defection at their own sweet will causing embarrassment to their own followers leaving them in lurch in an indecisive state to whom should they acknowledge or reject forever. In our own state, leaders exploited at will the sentiments and religious feelings for their own selfish gains over Amarnath land row last year, leading to toppling of democratic machinery. This year again, few cunning opportunistic leaders are hell bent to create same sort of situation over central university allotment issue. Such steps and moves are highly pinching and painful ones as such irrelevant modes are pushing our economy, already derailed, to the sate of jeopardy and back foot with no early signs of an early revival. If such type of unpardonable events kept on multiplying then days are not far off when we shall find ourselves living in Jungle Raj. Unless leaders donot resort to punctuality, honesty, clarity in their deeds, discipline in action in both letter and spirit which are true components of good governance, we can never pace our growth with other developing and developed nations. In short, leaders have to become a role model by elevating their own stature so that public tries to emulate their feat. Today, we are direly in need of past great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, JL Nehru, such etc Kripalani, Patel, SC Bose, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Dr. Rajender Prasadh and other prominent leaders whose names could not be accommodated for want of time and space, let we pray that almighty may shower upon them courage of sacrifice and velour to fight the venom of corruption for making this nation a place worthy enough to live in.
