| ‘Don’t panic, come, pay obeisance’ | | ACEO Bhandari says SMVDSB geared to combat flu | | Early Times Report
Katra, Aug 13: With the breakout of swine flu pandemic pressing panic button across country and Jammu having its own share of worries, in this season of religious festivals eyes are on the Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage which involves an average daily influx of 30,000 pilgrims from different parts of country. As state government has been claiming screening of all incoming passengers through flights, the same is not practically possible in case of Vaishno Devi pilgrimage. “It is not physically possible to screen 30,000 pilgrims everyday but I can assure every pilgrim that there is absolutely nothing to worry about”, says Dr Mandeep K Bhandari, the new Additional Chief Executive Officer of the SMVD Shrine Board. Dr Bhandari told Early Times that isolation facilities have been created all along the route and doctors have been sensitized to handle the cases, if they come across any. Doctors at all dispensaries and hospitals en route to Bhawan have been advised to remain alert if any ‘suspected’ case reported. He added, “right at the base camp, a reporting center has been established where any pilgrim feeling uneasiness or having developed any flu symptoms can report for immediate removal to Jammu”. The Board, Bhandari said, is fully geared up to meet any eventuality and has put team of doctors on alert en route to Bhawan. All five dispensaries besides hospitals en route to the shrine have been sanitised and in case any person showing ‘suspected’ swine flu symptoms would immediately be referred to Jammu Hospital. ''So far no such case have been reported but still teams of doctors have been instructed to remain prepared,'' the ACEO added. Meanwhile, the Minister for Health Sham Lal Sharma said in Jammu that for strengthening surveillance and testing facilities for pilgrims the matter has been taken up with Shrine Board Authorities and every possible assistance would be provided to them on priority basis. He said teams have also been constituted to monitor the symptoms if any in educational institutions. During morning assembly, the students and staff members would be educated regarding symptoms and precautionary measures required for prevention of disease.
