| Jammu, Aug 13: There was no let-up in anger in Jammu over the issue of Central University on Thursday as protest, demonstrations and classes boycott in the colleges continued in Jammu. Unfazed by the police "bandobast" at most of the city colleges, the students led by Central University Andolan Samiti (CUAS) members continued to agitate today as well in tandem with the Samiti’s line of action. Around half a dozen student leaders were arrested by the police after hundreds of students protesting over Central University issue, today 'gheraoed' Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Abdul Gani Malik at Government Gandhi Memorial Science College this morning. According to the sources, the Minister, who had gone to attend a function at GGM Science College was intercepted and ‘gheraoed’ by the students demanding establishment of Central University in Jammu region.‘’The Minister tried to pacify the protesting students but they gave no ear to his words and intensified the protest,’’ sources told. The students expressed anger over the state government’s decision of setting up Vice Chancellors office in the Valley despite the sanctioning of Central University to the Jammu region by the central governent.. Police had to apply mild force to disperse the protestors while seven student leaders included Pushwinder Singh, Ranjeet Sharma, Sunil Sharma, Sunny Jamwal, Shail Choudhary, Sunil and Ajay Sharma were arrested under preventive measure. They were taken to Nawabad Police Station. Suresh Ajay Magotra, secretary, CUAS later held protest demonstration at Jammu University against the arresting of student leaders at GGM Science College. The protesters closed the main gate of Jammu University for about half an hour and torched the tyres outside varsity. The situation took an ugly turn when the members of CUAS and Central University Joint Action Committee (CUJAC) entered into scuffle during protest demonstration. The police however rushed on the spot and control the situation. The CUJAC members demanded FIR against the activists of CUAS. They were raising slogans ‘Chief Minister Hai Hai’, ‘State Govt HaiHai’ and demanding Central University to be established in Jammu whereit was earlier sanctioned. CUAS member Pratap Singh led the demonstrations at GGM Science College and SPMR College of Commerce. Under his leadership students reportedly boycotted their classes and held demonstrations in their respective colleges. As per the directions of CUAS, the agitating students burnt the effigy of Revenue and Relief Minister Raman Bhalla. It needs to be mentioned that CUAS member Thakur Virender Singh, who had been leading students of Govt MAM College, was allegedly lifted by police at Akhnoor when he left the home to leave for college. However, he was released later. Reportedly, the students of MAM College also boycotted their classes and burnt the effigy of Dy Chief Minister to express their resentment against the State Government. Besides, students of GCW Parade and Gandhi Nagar also boycotted the classes but, in thin number. Also, the students of GDC Ramnagar led by CUAS member Yuvraj Singh held demonstration at Ramnagar and burnt the effigy of Raman Bhalla. Reports from Udhampur district said that students of Degree College held demonstration in college premises in main town and burnt effigy of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Meanwhile a massive signature campaign of JKNPP in support of setting up Central University at Jammu was inaugurated by Shri Harsh Dev Singh, Legislature Party Leader to generate public support and mobilization masses for establishment of Central University in Jammu Pradesh.
