Socio-economic outlook: Srinagar tops all distts Highest urban, lowest BPL population, highest CD ration, most active in banking

Jammu, Aug 13: Despite having lowest per capita expenditure out of district plan, the summer capital district of Srinagar tops in the socio-economic outlook in at least four of the six parameters while newly created districts like Reasi, Ramban and Kishtwar lag behind pathetically.
Srinagar district has the highest urban population in state and no other district (including Jammu) is even halfway around. The level of poverty is also lowest in Srinagar district, Kathua follows this privileged league and Reasi has highest percentage of population living below poverty line.
According to the latest available economic survey of Jammu and Kashmir, Jammu district tops the literacy rate at 83.73 per cent; Samba is second in line at 81.91 per cent. Rajouri is least literate at 48.37 per cent and followed by Kupwara and Badgam at 50 and 51 percent respectively. Literacy rate in Srinagar district is 75.61 per cent. 65.67 is the average total literacy rate in Jammu and Kashmir.
At 92.22 per cent, Srinagar district has the highest urban population out of the total population recorded in census of 2001. The next most urbanized district in the state is Jammu with only 46.86 urban population out of the total census population. Jammu is followed by Samba, Leh, Kathua and Udhampur –all ranged between 15 and 25 per cent urban population. Kupwara in north Kashmir is the district with lowest urban population -3.92 per cent only. Interestingly, State’s total urban population is only 24 per cent.
The economic survey reveals that Srinagar district has the maximum banking activity in state banks too appear liberal with their Srinagar consumers. While Jammu and Kashmir’s average credit-deposit (CD) ratio is 49.63 per cent, Srinagar district has it 84.65 percent. The CD ratio in Jammu is 37.13 percent and lowest is in Kishtwar -15 percent. In CD ration, Shopian is next only to Srinagar at 59.62 percent (a different of around 24 points) this is followed by Bandipore 55 per cent and Ganderbal 50 percent.
The spread of banks and population covered by each branch is also path-breaking in Srinagar district. While average area covered by each bank branch in Jammu and Kashmir is around 110 square kilometers, in Srinagar district it is just as low as 8.10 square kilometers. Jammu closely follows at 12.29, in Kishtwar it is 967, Doda 165, Reasi 85, Poonch 83 and Rajouri 67 square kilometers.
In Srinagar, there is a bank branch for every population chunk of 8144 persons while the same in Jammu is 8581 and in Kishtwar it is for 28662 persons. At State level, in Jammu and Kashmir, there is a bank branch for an average population group of 13334 persons; in Doda such coverage is for 19100 persons, in Rajouri 14889 and Samba 12494 persons.
Srinagar district leads not only in maximum urbanized population and banking but also in quality of life. While J&K has 21 percent of total population living below poverty line, in Srinagar there is only 6.51 percent of this unprivileged lot out of total population of the district. While Jammu district is also well below the state average having only 11.97 per cent of the total population of district living below poverty line; 16 of the total 22 districts have the percentage of their total population living below poverty line higher than the state average of 21.63 percent. Reasi tops the list highest BPL population at 37.93 percent and is followed by Poonch 33 per cent, Kupwara 32 per cent and Kargil 31 per cent.
