Education deptt to be made responsive to global needs: Malik
“Inspects ongoing works at GCET “

JAMMU, AUG 14 : Minister for Higher Education Mr. Abdul Gani Malik today visited the Government College of Engineering and Technology to inspect various ongoing projects in the college campus .He was accompanied by Director Colleges Dr. N. D. Wani.
During his visit the Minister was informed that for the construction of various blocks in the first phase about Rs. 25 crores have been released so far and construction work of civil engineering, computer engineering department, common lecture hall and hostel block have been completed while work of mechanical engineering block is under execution. Principal GCET, Mr Bhupinder Singh apprised the minister that three teaching departments of the college i.e electronics and communication, civil, and computer engineering alongwith a part of library are functioning at new campus since 2006.
While reviewing the ongoing works in the campus, Mr Malik asked the concerned executing agencies to expedite the ongoing works in the campus and prioritize the works so that there are no delays in shifting the other departments in the new campus .He said that the new campus will be developed on modern lines to impart quality technical knowledge to the students, adding that best infrastructural and logistic facilities would be provided to make the institution a premiere engineering institute to strengthen technical skill in the state .The minister said that upgradation and modernization of technical education holds the key to the development of any economy and therefore major thrust would be laid on improving the facilities in the colleges .
While interacting with the staff Mr Malik discussed their problems and assured them of concrete steps to be taken to safeguard their professional interests and also the matter of their career advancement would be taken up with the concerned authorities. He asked them to work with same zeal in executing their duties and preparing their students for successfully exploring new avenues
Later, Mr. Malik visited M.A.M College and planted a sapling to start a plantation drive on the occasion of 60th Van Mahotsav. The drive was organized by NSS unit of the college in collaboration with the Social Forestry department
Principal M.A.M College Mr M. S. Baloria informed the Minister about various achievements of the college in academics and other array of activities and also apprised him with some of the issues pertaining to the development of the college. The minister also visited the newly established computer lab for starting the BCA course in the college.
Mr. Malik while interacting with the staff exhorted the teaching fraternity to be responsive to the global need while imparting education to the students .He added that education department has to be revamped and restructured so as to foresee the challenges of future and come up with viable plans .He said that teachers have a vital role to play in policy making and achieving desirable results as they have a social responsibility to transform their students into socioeconomic assets for the nation.
While speaking on the importance of plantation drives, the Minister asserted that global warming is a major concern and we have to make collaborative efforts in protecting our environment. He laid stress on organizing more awareness drives and involving students in these programme. A symposium on protection of environment was also organized during the occasion. Regional Director Social Forestry Mr Manoj Pant, Mr. Pritam Singh DFO Social Forestry Department were among others present.
