| Surveillance & Isolation Centre becomes functional at Bhagwati Nagar | | Chib assures all measures to check swine flu | | Early Times Report JAMMU, AUG 14: A 10 bedded surveillance and isolation centre for Swine Flu cases has become functional at Bhagwati Nagar, Jammu with adequate number of specialist doctors, medical officers and paramedical staff, sufficient stock of medicines and equipments. A nodal officer has also been stationed there to coordinate between Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu and the isolation Centre. This was disclosed during a visit to the surveillance and isolation centre by Minister for Medical Education, Youth affairs and Sports, Mr. R. S. Chib here today. He was accompanied by Principal GMC, Jammu, Dr. Rajinder Singh, Director Health Services, Jammu, Dr. Jasbeer Singh and other senior doctors. The Centre will be open 24 hours and provide screening facilities for the suspected patients whereby the samples will be collected for testing H1N1 virus, suspected cases will be isolated and treated. Later, the Minister convened a meeting to review the preparedness of the Health and Medical Education departments in which the team of doctors headed by Dr. Jatinder Singh dealing with swine flu at GMC, Jammu also participated. Mr. Chib informed that the government is providing Rs. 25 lakh to SKIMS for upgradation of diagnostic facilities and asked GMC Jammu to come up with a similar proposal as the entire diagnostic lab costs between Rs. 90 lakh to Rs. 1 crore. He said that the already existing diagnostic facilities can be upgraded so that testing of samples can be conducted at Jammu, adding that government is seriously monitoring the situation and would do utmost to check the spread of disease in the state. He informed that so far, one H1N1 positive case in Jammu and two in Srinagar have been detected. Regarding setting up isolation centre within GMC, Jammu, it was decided to explore the possibility of creation of such centre at a distance from the main hospital. It was disclosed that the GOI has issued guidelines for dealing with swine flu, which will be circulated to all the doctors, adding that both Health and Medical Education departments are coordinating jointly to deal with the dreaded virus. He said that awareness must be generated among the people regarding the symptoms of the disease as panic has resulted in people with minor flu and cold symptoms rushing to hospitals for screening for H1N1. The Minister also interacted with the Medical PG Students’ and Employees Association representatives who highlighted the demand placement in higher pay band and other anomalies in the Sixth Pay Commission announced by the government. Mr. Chib informed that a meeting is being convened by the Finance Minister on Sunday, August 16 at 6:00 p.m. in which apart from him, Health Minister, Minister of state for Health and Medical Education will participate. He invited the representatives of all Associations to come in the meeting to plead their demands, adding that the government will address all the genuine grievances. Earlier, the Minister visited Kusht Ashram at Bhagwati Nagar and greeted the inmates on the eve of Independence day. Recalling his long association with the Kusht Ashram, Mr. Chib announced a special grant from his personal fund for all the school going children of the Ashram under which the child will be provided Rs. 1000 per year for his studies. He also assured the inmates that all their genuine demands regarding the functioning of Anganwadi Centre at the ashram will be put forth before the Social Welfare Minister, Ms. Sakina Itoo who will visit the Ashram shortly. Regarding the problem of sewerage and drainage, he assured tio take the matter with Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand who holds the portfolio of Municipality. Sweets were also distributed among the inmates. A deputation of residents of Bhagwati Nagar lead by District Vice-President Youth Congress Urban, Rashpal Singh Chib and Senior President Pawan Raina met the minister and apprised him of their demand for construction of playground in the area and shifting of HT line. The minister assured that to construct a playground in the area for which land is already available.
