Yet to celebrate freedom from water, power crisis
8/14/2009 9:26:37 PM

India celebrates its yet another independence Day today.People in the country are yet to celebrate freedom from poverty, terror, power and drinking water crisis. For the last ovcer three decades independence Day celebrations are held under tight security measures not only in Delhi but in all the states. As far as Jammu and Kashmir state is concerned the 20-year long militancy has forced the authorities to strengthen the security grid even at the village and tehsil levels during the independence Day celebrations.Right from 1990,when militancy took firm roots in Kashmir, militants with the support of separatists have been seen celebrating Pakistan's independence Day in some parts of the valley on August 14.And on August 15 extremists, aided by guntoting youths, would observe India's independence as a black day.In the mid-90's groups of militants, camping in higher reaches and forest belts would hold parades on August 14 in order to demonstrate that they wanted Kashmir's incorporation with Pakistan. And over the years terrorists activities spread to other states in the country.Despite terror threats people and the Government agencies evince keen interest in celebrating the Day with a sense of pride and glory.Well one believes that gradually India will win freedom from terror. This very terror infrastructure has eluded peace in the Indian subcontinent. And those who are keen to see Kashmir becoming either independent or part of Pakistan have been arguing that peace and normalcy will not be restored to India unless the Kashmir issue was settled.India has shown its will to face odds while t rying to resolve the issue through negotiations but it seems that the successive Governments in the centre and in the states have not demonstrated firm determination for freeing the country from poverty, unemployment, power and water crisis.Come summer we have half of the country's population crying, protesting and lamenting over acute shortage of electricity and drinking water.Time has come when the Government needs to review the entire power and water scenario so that people felt liberated from water and electricity crisis. It is understandable that major portion of the country's resources and revenue are spent on the defence prepardness but a balanced exercise is needed for developing different sectors that have direct bearing on the people of the country. It is a matter of satisfaction that during these 60 years India has achieved adequate progress in the field of science, agriculture and industry. It would have achieved bigger strides had not the country been tormented by the activities of its immediate neighbours,Pakistan,China and Bangladesh. However,India has succeeded in maintaining cordial relations with all developed nations, especially the US and Russia.Progress is there but it is slow in various sectors.Experts believe that population boon is the major hurdle in India's rapid progress. It is an admitted fact that India is yet to achieve freedom from poverty, unemployment, power and drinking water problems but what makes India proud in the world is the way its democratic structure has never collapsed. Despite many economic and political ills India has shown to the world the art of sustaining ans strengthening democratic institutions that may have been difficult in any other country having diverse linguistic and ethnic culture.Let people join hands and rise above caste, creed and colour considerations for strengthening the roots of development and democracy.(eom)
