| Pak style of experimeting against terrorists | | | Despite heavy presence of the US troops in the region both Pakistan and Afghanistan continue to carry out one political experiment after the other in order to free the nations of the menace of terrorism which the Talibans and the men of the AlQaeda represent.Till the other day Pakistani troops were under the instructions of carrying out operations against the Talibans in the tribal areas of the NWFP.Several hundred Taliban activists had been eliminated and forced to run for safety but the Government is yet to gain control of the Taliban dominated Waziristan tribal belt. And when the going became tough for the Pakistani troops President Asif Ali Zardari came out with an announcement lifting ban on tribal politics. He stated that the Government intended to push through political reforms in the seven federally administered tribal areas(FATA) in order to ensure that the tribal belts were free from the grip of the Talibans and Al Qeda militants. The FATA had become a stronghold of hundreds of Talibans and Al Qaeda militants who fled after the US led invasion brought down the hardline Taliban regime in Afghanistan in 2001.Since then these battle-hardened Taliban and Al Qaeda leaders have been holding sway over the tribals without caring for Pakistani laws.In fact Pakistani laws do not run in the FATA and all political, military, social economic, and cultural matters are goverened under the laws being promulgated by the Taliban and Al Qaeda militant commanders.Political analysts believe that Zardari by lifting ban on political activities in the FATA was trying to bring the t ribal belts closer to the national politics. Will he succeed ?It is too early to comment on it.One thing is definite that lifting of ban on tribal politcs alone may not perform the miracle of freeing the FATA of the clutches of the Talibans and the Al Qaeda militants.Support to political activities need to be backed by the coninued military operations against the Talibans and Al Qaeda militants.Zardari's experiment may achieve the desired results once the local people felt they were the shapers of their destiny but this optimism need to be protected and that can be done by allowing bigger foothold to the NATO that have been deployed in FATA and Afghanistan.Even in Afghanistan the US supported Hamid Karzai Government has started signing truce deals with Talibans in order to ensure incident free general elections. The threat of Talibans disrupting the poll process had forced the Government to shut 700 out of 7,000 voting centres.Since the truce deals have been signed and similar deals were to be signed in other belts majority of voting centres may be kept open during the polling time.Karzai's brither Ahmed Wali Karzai has confirmed that truces with Talibans were under process in several disturbed provinces including Kandahar,Helmand and may be completed within next few days.Under the truce the Taliban commanders will agree to to pull back on election day allowing the Afghan Army and police to secure the polling centres so that voters had no problem in casting their votes. The US leadership believes that another term for Hamid Karzai,as President of Afghanistan would further cement US-Afghan ties to the disadvantage of Taliban and Al Qaeda militants.Another term for Hamid Karzai could be politically advantageous for Islamabad notwithstanding intermittent conflict between the Pakistani leadership and the Kabul Government. |
