| Swine flu: doctors feel ostracised | | 7 suspects clear test, results of 28 awaited | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 16: Much to the relief of many swine flu suspects, the test reports have confirmed only one of the eight samples positive even as reports of 28 other suspects are still awaited clearance from New Delhi based National Institution of Communicable Diseases. Meanwhile, in an interesting case of widely televised panic and scare over swine flu, the doctors engaged in screening of patients in Jammu are facing a sort of ostracising at hands of friends and social contacts Health officials said that blood samples of 36 Swine-Flu suspects were sent to New Delhi for test in which GMC hospital administration has received 8 reports from National Institute of Communicable Disease while 28 reports are yet to be received. Except a female engineering student from Nanak Nagar all 7 reports are found negative. However reports of the rest of the suspects will be reached in Jammu by tomorrow, sources maintained. Giving information doctor RS Charak who is the head of doctors’ team of different faculties when said that medical check up of 30 suspects were held today. Pertinent to mention here that nearly fifteen hundred persons reported to Swine-Flu OPD for medical checkup so far following by the complaints of Swine-Flu symptoms and majority of them are students who are studying in those states caught by Swine-Flu. The scare is however taking a different toll in Jammu. The phobia of H1N1 virus has reached new heights. Doctors, general practitioners and paramedicos snag a sudden drop in their social life due to panic caused by media reports regarding virus. “We are facing a social boycott,” said one of the doctors rather carefully. It is little wonder that many general practitioners are now refusing to entertain swine flu patients. State authorities too have acknowledged that growing number of general practitioner are becoming wary of patients suffering from flu like symptoms. In GMC, Jammu the staff is facing the worst of social boycott. The deputy Superintendent of GMC Satish Gupta said that his friends are avoiding him for the reason of flu virus. Another doctor who works at GMC hospital had to cancel his Sunday plans as he was looking forward to attend a family function, until a few well-meaning relatives advised him against his presence. “Even my neighbors are not so comfortable interacting with me,” he said. Apparently, they’re worried that they will contact the virus if they talk to him. If the rate of patients will keep increasing the way it goes, in the very near future schoolings, employees of various departments and even shopkeepers will hesitate to talk to each other. Fighting the virus is as important as spreading awareness regarding swine flu as large section of the people is unaware of the facts. “It looked me as good as to take risk by taking my minor son for check up to hospital and consulted a private doctor for treating hid mild fever” said Sanjeev Kumar a well qualified person. If the educated people can think in such a way what could be expected from other sections of the society.
