| PM’s speech disappointing for Kashmir : Tarigami | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Aug 17 : The Communist Party of India(M) today said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's Independence Day speech in which he had said there was no place for separatist thought in Jammu and Kashmir has caused unrest in the Kashmir valley.
The speech has caused unrest among the people in the Valley, the lone CPI(M) member Mohammad Yousuf Targami said in the Legislative Assembly today.
He said the speech was against the stand and policy of the government.
There is an issue of Kashmir, accepted by all which has to be resolved through dialogue process peacefully, he said.
Mr Targami said the Government of India has been talking to Pakistan on this issue. Several rounds of talks had been held in the past, he said, adding that the Centre had also held negotiations with the separatist leaders in Kashmir.
The CPI(M) member said the Centre should take advantage of the situation and hold talks with the separatists and Pakistan to find a solution acceptable to all.
Yesterday, the speech of Prime Minister drew sharp reactions from the separatists and main opposition party in the state, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The separatist organisation challenged the Government of India to hold refrendum in the state as promised by the Indian leaders since 1947. ''If we are irrelevant, hold referendum to resolve the Kashmir issue once and for all,'' they said.
However, the PDP patron and former chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed cautioned the Centre not to see peaceful Assembly and Lok Sabha elections as end of the Kashmir issue.
It was ''dangerous'', he said in a statement here yesterday.
Referring to the stalled peace process, Mr Mufti urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to initiate substantial and visible action to arrest the rising levels of alienation and unrest in the state.
He said while it was good to refer to the successful election process in the state, as the Prime Minister did in his Independence Day address, it would be dangerous to see that as end of the problem.
