| Govt wakes up to draught challenge; | | 64% loss reported in Kathua district | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 17: In a late reaction to nationwide outcry on draught fuelling fears of acute food shortage, the Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered survey of possible damage to crops in the state, particularly in Jammu region where rainfall has remained far below the average during cropping season. While reports from other districts are being gathered, the Kathua district alone is reported to have recorded 64% loss to the crops. The government has claimed that no loss has, so far, been reported from six of the ten districts in Jammu province. In reply to a calling attention notice of BJP leader Prof Chaman Lal Gupta, the Revenue Minister Raman Bhalla told Legislative Assembly in Srinagar today that drought like situation has taken place because of less rainfall in most parts of the Jammu division. This is a cause of major concern for the government and action has already been initiated to assess the losses. He said that revenue officials along with concerned agriculture officers have been directed to assess the losses immediately. He said there has not been any kind of losses due to this situation in districts of Poonch, Rajouri, Udhampur, Reasi, Doda and Kishtwar. The losses in Kathua have been reported as 64% where an area of 14358 acres has been involved, he added. Similarly, the losses in Hiranagar area have been assessed as 90% where an area of 25201 acres has been found involved. Mr. Bhalla said that in other parts like Basohli, Billawar, Bani, Ramban, Jammu and Akhnoor the losses have been assessed from 23% to 26 % which does not qualify for any relief under CRF norms. He said that the losses assessed are tentative and cannot be taken as authentic. He said that once the final report is received along with list of assamies and the damage assessed is more than 50 %, the same will be placed before the CRF Committee for their approval.
