| 10-day Science exhibition concludes | | VC calls for proper use of technology | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Aug 21: The Kashmir University vice-chancellor, Prof Riyaz Punjabi on Friday called for proper use of technology for enhancing the levels of understanding. Addressing students and academics during the valedictory function of the 10-day Science Exhibition in the campus, Prof Punjabi said, “Today we are living in the age of information technology. It is very important for the students, scholars and society in general to make proper use of this technology for enhancing their understanding.” In the past 10 says, more than 7000 students from different colleges and schools visited the Exhibition organized by the Varsity in collaboration with the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India. “There is need to review the science and mathematics curriculum in schools. We will be taking some initiatives in this regard to make the subjects more attractive for students,” said Prof Punjabi while underlining the importance of Science education in the present world. “We will try our level best to ensure that more and more students opt for Science, at least up to 12th standard, so that they have a sound base in the subject”, he added. The dean, Academic Affairs, Prof A R Yousuf asserted that students were very much interested in studying Science. “But somewhere something is wrong because of which we observe decline in the Science education in educational institutions in Kashmir,” he said, adding there was need to address this issue. The KU registrar, Prof S Fayyaz Ahmad, said “We have taken up promotion of Science education as a mission adding that the exhibition is a step in that direction”. The Exhibition coordinator, Dr Naseer Ahmad, presented a brief report about the Exhibition. He said the Ministry of Earth Sciences has asked the University to retain the “Antarctica portion” of the Exhibition for future programs. Students from different schools expressed their views about the exhibition. “The exhibition helped us a lot in understanding different inventions of science,” said Rehab from R P School. Another student, Rahila, from the same school said the exhibition was interesting. “However I believe the exhibition should have been held in a more spacious place,” she said.
