| NPP, BJP walkout from Assembly on CU issue | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Aug 21: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly today witnessed a walkout by the National Panthers Party (NPP) and BJP after the parties were not satisfied with the reply on the issue of establishing Central University. The trouble started when Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather, in reply to a question asked by NPP member Haresh Dev Singh, informed the House that the government was working on setting up new colleges, polytechnics, central university and IIM in the state. However, when Mr Singh especifically asked where the Central University would be set up--Jammu or Srinagar--, Mr Rather replied a high-level state delegation, led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, had already taken up the issue with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Human Resources Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal urging them to sanction two universities for both the regions. ''We have been assured by the Centre that they will consider our request,'' Mr Rather said. Moreover, it was a central university and the decision where it would be set up had to be taken by the Centre, he informed the House. However, the NPP and BJP were raised on their feet, alleging that the state government had done nothing even after nine months when the university, degree colleges and IIM were sanctioned by the Centre. All schools and colleges in Jammu were closed for the past two months as students were demanding opening of the university there, they said, adding the government was delaying the matter. When Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone took another business, the members shouted slogans ''coalition sarkar hai hai, give Central university to Jammu.'' Later, barring three members--Mankotia, Jugal Kishore and Ashwani Kumar--, who stormed into the well of the House, all other NPP and BJP members staged walkout from the House. Despite being asked to resume their seats by the Speaker, all the three members keep shouting slogans. Sheikh Abdul Rashid, an Independent member, also was on his feet, protesting NPP and BJP members for storming into the well of the House. Nothing was heard in the press gallery. Later, all the three members walked out from the House.
