| PG student hold protest demonstration; goes on hunger strike | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Aug 24: Suraj Singh, a Post Graduate student of Jammu University and blind, held a protest demonstration in front of Dhanvantri Library Jammu University and went on hunger strike till the fulfilment of demands. In a statement Suraj said that four years back during the tenure of Prof. Amitabh Mattoo, the then Vice Chancellor of Jammu University, he initiated for an E-learning educational centre for the Blind students of Jammu University and all affiliated colleges and worked hard for completion of the work. But every time whenever he approached to the concerned authorities of Dhanvantri Library, they delayed the proposal on one pretext or other making mockery on my blindness and helplessness. He said that in spite of the fact that being a blind person it is not possible for me to visit their office daily. ‘The authorities never cared my hardships and on every moment I faced humiliation from them’, he alleged. He said that today when the proposal has reached at its final stage the concerned library authorities (I/C Librarian of the Dhanvantri Library Prof. Naresh Padha) categorically refused to provide any basic infrastructure facility and equipments necessary to run software in computers. Besides this, the authorities agreed to provide only one computer for the centre which in no way is acceptable as the single computer can not fulfill the requirement of so many aggrieved students. Suraj said that on seeing the ridiculous attitude of the concerned authorities, he decided to go for hunger strike till the authorities establish the centre with all necessary requirements which were earlier accepted by the then Vice-Chancellor Prof. Amitabh Mattoo , needed for running the centre. He appealed to the present Vice Chancellor Jammu University Prof. Varun Sahini to personally intervene into the matter so that the students like him can continue their studies in a smooth manner and might have not to suffer any more hardships.
