| Gastroenteritis claim 3 lives, 100 ill in Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Aug 24 : Demanding action against senior engineers of Public Health Engineering (PHE) department, National Panthers Party (NPP) member Harsh Dev Singh today alleged in the Legislatie Assembly that due to supply of contaminated water three people have died and 100 others fell ill in about half-a-dozen villages in Udhampur district. Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone also took up the issue of a damaged pipe in his constituency for the past three months.
As the House met today, the members of the NPP and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were on their feet wanting to raise some important issues.
The PDP members resumed their seats after the Speaker assured them of a chance to speak after question hour.
However, he allowed Mr Singh to speak. Mr Singh alleged that because of damaged water pipes, people in about half-a-dozen villages in Udhampur district were drinking contaminated water leading to gastroenteritis.
Three people have so far died and another 100 were ill, he said and alleged that Executive Engineer and other senior officers of the PHE have not taken any action despite repeated reminders.
The engineers said they had no pipes to replace the damaged pipes, he added.
On the directions of the Speaker Lone, PHE minister Taj Mohiuddin said it was very unfortunate.
He assured the House that action would be taken against the officials responsible for the unfortunate incident.
Mr Taj said funds will be released for repair of the pipes immediately.
Mr Lone complained that he took up the issue of one damaged water pipe in Hajan area of his constituency with Chief Engineer to junior engineer.
''For the past three months, I have been raising the issue with these engineers but the damaged pipe could not be repaired,'' Mr Lone said.
Mr Taj assured that he would instruct the engineers to fix the damaged pipes immediately.
