| Members from Treasury, Opposition protest against ration shortage | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Aug 24 : Cutting across party lines, Members from the Treasury and Opposition benches today lodged their strong protest against the shortage of ration in Jammu and Kashmir. Members from almost all political parties, irrespective of their party affiliation, expressed concern over the non-availability of ration in Government depots in the state.
Initiating a discussion in the Legislative Assembly on voting on Demands for Grants for the year 2009-10 for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CA&PD), ruling National Conference (NC) Member Mir Saifullah said he flet feel hurt when he was told by people about shortage of ration in his constituency.
The ration depots are empty as no ration has been received by the depot holders so far. This, he said, was the position despite the fact that CA&PD Minister Qamar Ali Akhoon has assured this House that ration will be made available by first of every month at all ration depots in the state.
The Minister was attending the house, Mr Saifullah alleged and said people were crying for food everywhere in the state.
He said despite being the Member from the ruling party, he wanted to raise this issue since it was the question of people's survival.
Mr Saifullah, in a very emotional speech, said, ''people elected us to this House despite facing threats and other odds. They wanted their problems to get solved.'' He and alleged that the Government had failed to provide them ration, which was one of the basic necessity for survival.
He said members were not able to visit their constituencies where people were protesting against them for not solving their problems.
The acute shortage of ration has put a question mark on the functioning of the Ministry, Mr Saifullah said, adding, ''if people will not get ration I will be forced to storm into the well of the House and protest.''
