| Normal life thrown out of gear as Kashmir observes strike | | Protests over Guru’s death warrants continue | |
Srinagar, Sep 29 : The death verdict to Muhammad Afzal Guru provoked protest demonstration across Kashmir region for the third consecutive day on Friday, while the normal life was thrown out of gear in Srinagar, summer capital of the state, where people observed a complete shut down in response to a call given by various separatists’ organizations. Sensing the possibility of trouble, number of separatist leaders including hardliner Sayeed Ali Shah Geelani, Shabir Ahmed Shah and Nayeem Khan were placed under house arrest by the police. Reports reaching here from various areas revealed that protest demonstrations were organized at various places in Srinagar and its outskirts area where people participated in large number. More two dozen people including some senior separatists leaders have been arrested by the police from various places. The strike call was given in protest against a Delhi sessions court’s verdict to hang Muhammad Afzal Guru, the main accused in Parliament attack. Even the death penalty has received strong criticism from the mainstream political parties, which now believe that the execution of the death warrants on the last Friday of Ramadan, could be fatal for Kashmir politics and ongoing peace process. The call for strike was given by Hurriyat faction led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani and was supported by Kashmir High Court Bar Association, United Jehad Council, an umbrella of different militant outfits. All the shops and business establishment in the summer capital remained closed throughout the day, while the commercial traffic was also out of the road. The attendance at the government offices was also affected due to the non-plying of vehicles on the roads. Sources told News Agency of Kashmir that a large number of people assembled at Khanyar area of downtown Srinagar, here this morning, and took out a massive protest demonstration. Raising pro-independent and anti-India slogans, the protestors burnt tiers on the road and also chased away few auto-rickshaws plying on the road. Reports revealed that a procession led by Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front leaders was taken out from Guru's ancestral village, Dabgam in Baramulla district. Reports of widespread demonstrations have been received from all Srinagar, Baramulla, Budgam, Kupwara, Islamabad, Tral and Shopian in Kashmir division and Kishtwar and Doda area in Jammu division. Chairman of hardliner faction of Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Shah Geelani remained under house arrest for the second successive day today while President of Democratic Freedom Party Shabir Ahmad Shah and president of National Front Mohammad Nayeem Khan were placed under house arrest this morning, official sources said. Geelani, Shah and Khan were planning to lead the protests at different areas of the valley today, added the sources. |
