Jammu, August 25: At least nine Army personnel, including two officers, have been accused of beating up a police party in Poonch. The police party was being led by the Station House Officer of Poonch police station, Mr Kuldeep Khajuria.
The Poonch police have now filed an FIR against two officers and seven other ranks (Ors) of 17 Rajput Rifles unit. The FIR has been filed under Section 147, 307, 332, 342, 352, 353 and 382.
Section 147 covers premeditated attack, 307 deals with murderous assault, 332, 342 deals with illegal confinement, 352 deals with restraining government officials from discharging their duty, 353 deals with attack on government servants on duty and 382 deals with looting or forcibly depriving someone of his possessions.
The DIG of Rajouri-Poonch range, Mr S D Singh Jamwal, confirmed the incident saying the Army personnel have been booked. In due course of time, action will be taken against them as warranted under law, he added.
According to the police, the assault on SHO was led by two officers, Major Sudhir and Major Nabi, and several jawans also joined them. Both the officers have been booked and the police now plan to move the court for getting arrest warrants issued against the Army personnel.
The chain of events leading up to the alleged beating of the SHO was triggered by the arrest of two Territorial Army (TA) jawans on Sunday evening. Mohammed Aslam and Inayat Hussain of 156 Battalion of TA were arrested after they were found carrying fake currency worth Rs 1.70 lakh.
The duo, during questioning by the police, gave the name of another accomplice whom the police party arrested on Monday morning. The police party was coming back to Poonch from a forward area falling under Army control when it was assaulted, according to the FIR number 114 of 2009 registered at Police Station Poonch.
The SHO’s personnel security officers (PSOs) were stopped outside the Army area and the SHO alone was asked to meet the officers. It was then that he was allegedly assaulted. The defence Public Relations Officer (PRO) here, Colonel Viplav Nath, did not have any details of the incident ``officially’’ till Tuesday morning. Some officers in the 16 Corps headquarters at Nagrota termed the incident as ``unfortunate’’ and said that action is likely against the guilty Army personnel.
