| Statistics again embarrass Government in assembly | | Speaker assures action on privilege motion against Govt | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Aug 25: As the government once faulted with its own statistics, the Assembly Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone today assured opposition BJP that he will take "appropriate action" if it brings a privilege motion against the State Government for allegedly misleading the House. The latest contradiction is on the number of Kashmiri Pandit migrants –House was given to understand that there were only 33439 registered Hindu migrants, a year ago the same House was told about 56000 migrants.
The assurance came after BJP legislature party leader Chaman Lal Gupta complained to Lone that the Government was misleading the House by giving contradictory replies to questions regarding the number of Kashmiri migrants.
"Bring the privilege motion, I assure you that I will take appropriate action", the speaker said in the House.
Gupta said in an answer to his question on August 22, Government said only 33,499 Hindu migrants were registered with Jammu relief authorities as on January this year as against 56,000 mentioned by it in an answer to a question in the same house a year ago.
The BJP leader raised the issue during the question hour when a question relating to the rehabilitation of migrant pandits was raised by CPI(M) member M Y Tarigami.
The state Revenue Minister Raman Bhalla, while giving details of the Prime Minister's package for the rehabilitation of the Kashmiri migrants, said Rs 7.50 lakhs cash assistance was being given for construction and renovation of houses for those migrants who have sold their properties prior to 1997.
Apart from relief packages, Bhalla informed the House about various other schemes of the state government for the Hindu migrants which include transit accommodation for a period of six months and scholarship for school children belonging to such families.
He also mentioned a package for providing employment to 6000 migrant youth with the help of central government.
The minister said the migrants who wish to return and want to set up industrial units in the valley would be entitled for cash assistance of Rs five lakh out of which Rs 2.50 lakh will be the subsidy component and Rs 2.50 lakh would be recoverable in easy instalments.
The migrant would be entitled for cash assistance for re-cultivation of agricultural and horticultural land upto a Rs.1.50 lakh, respectively, he said, adding that those who had loan outstanding as on January 1990 would be entitled for waiver of interest.
Bhalla said the monthly cash assistance was enhanced for Kashmiri migrants residing in Jammu in July 2006 from Rs 750 to Rs 1000 per soul per month subject to a ceiling of Rs 4000 per month per family.
The minister also said that the flats constructed at Sheikhpora in Budgam district and Mattan in Anantnag district will provide transit accommodation for the migrants.
At Jagti-Nagrota in Jammu, 4,218 flats are under construction and the project is expected to be completed by May 2010, Bhalla said.
