Don’t give political orientation to withdrawal of security forces: BJP
8/26/2009 10:10:29 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 26- Terming the situation in twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch as not conducive for withdrawal of security forces, the state BJP today asked the Chief Minister to get himself acquainted with the ground realities before making demand of withdrawal of troops.
Addressing media persons here today the BJP senior leader Kuldeep Raj Gupta said the security forces were deployed in different parts of the state with an objective to counter militants as the state police was not equipped with the modern and sophisticated weaponry to face the danger posed by the ultras. The menace of militancy has not ended completely hence demanding removal of security forces is in no way in the interest of the state and the people. The State Chief Minister and the PDP leaders should not give a political orientation to the sensitive issue, he said and asked these parties not play politics over this sensitive issue and rather concentrate on burning problems being faced by the people of the state.
Appreciating the role of Village Defence Committees (VDCs) in protecting lives and property of the people in far -flung areas, Gupta said that it was very unfortunate that the members of these committees are not paid regularly. Those recruited as SPOs are also paid very less and demanded that their monthly emoluments should be enhanced to at least five thousand rupees per month. He said these are the people who are directly in touch with the population of their respective areas and have been rendering their services round the clock. Many of them have sacrificed their lives while fighting against the militants. He said the government should frame a policy to strengthen the VDCs and ensure payment of wages on regular basis.
Expressing grave concern over the sky rocketing prices, the BJP leader said the government supplies just 35 kilograms of ration per family from ration depots which is not enough for a family consisting of 10-12 or more members. This is posing threat to the very survival of poor people who can not buy costly ration from the market. He said the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution department should reconsider its decision and provide at least 15 kilograms of ration per member of a family.
BJP State spokesperson Ramesh Arora and Press Secretary Balbir Ram were also present in the press conference.
