| JU students, scholars postpone agitation; authorities accept demands | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 26- Following acceptance of demands by the Jammu University authorities the students and research scholars, who were on fast onto death from last two days, have postponed their agitation for next three weeks. Announcing this at a press conference here today Suraj Singh said that after an hour long meeting held last evening the concerned authorities have accepted most of the demands of the striking students and scholars. The demands include installation of software/ hardware for the visually challenged students, besides providing internet facility, head phone speakers, and EPABX connectivity and furniture in the Centre established for the visually challenged students. He said the authorities have given in writing that the centre would be made functional within next 21 days. He further said that keeping in consideration the written assurance by Prof. Naresh Padha (I/C Librarian, Dhanvantri Library) in presence of Prof. Bansi Lal Sharma, Provosts Hostels, Dr. Vinay Chauhan, Warden SVNBH JU, Guneet Sudan, Assistant Director Technology, Vijay Gupta and Ashok Singh, Research Scholar Department of Urdu JU, we have decided to postpone our fast unto death but if the authorities somehow fail to fulfill the promise then we will again chalk out our future course of action, he added. Suresh Kumar who also spoke on the occasion thanked the university authorities for accepting their genuine demands and assured to co-operate the authorities in the establishment of the centre. He further opined that with the opening of this centre the aggrieved students of Jammu University and its affiliated colleges will be in a position to get connected to the day to day happenings of the world and shall contribute their best for the progress of the nation. Terming it a victory of the students Suresh said that we shall approach to Union Human Resource Development Ministry to make these types of centers mandatory for all the universities in the country. He also urged upon the University Grants Commission (UGC) for making a provision of special financial package for the visually challenged students so that they can continue their higher education. Suresh also appreciated the efforts of media, both print as well as electronic, in highlighting the cause of the students. Prominent among others present on the occasion were Mohinder Kumar Badyal, Research Scholar Department of Hindi, Varinder Sharma, Post Graduate student of Sanskrit Department, Tarun Gupta, Department of Sociology, Mukti Tikkoo, Research Scholar Department of Hindi and Bhanu Pratap of Law School.
