| Ex-servicemen demand withdrawal of VAT on canteen items | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 26 –Ex- servicemen and those in the Army and the BSF have urged the Jammu and Kashmir Government to follow Punjab pattern and revise tax structure on canteen items. The annual increase of 10 to 20 per cent of taxes on varied items sold in the canteens in Jammu and Kashmir has resulted in higher selling prices in all items including electric and electronic gadgets, the ex-servicemen said. Makhan Singh said that by charging VAT and enhancing excise the state Government would earn not more than Rs.5 to Rs.10 crores. It could save much more if the government orders some austerity measures in the government departments, he added. .He said "our pension amount was quite meager and we cannot afford to pay more rates for items we purchase from the canteens". Reminding the role of the ex-servicemen he said the government should revise the tax structure and withdraw VAT on canteen items. The Ex-servicemen suggested to the Finance Minister, Abdul Rahim Rather, not to charge any VAT on items sold in the BSF and Army canteens. They said Punjab Chief Minister, Prakash Singh Badal, had on Tuesday announced that the Government will not charge any VAT on canteen items. Hoshiar Singh and Makhan Singh, ex- serviceman hailing from Miransahib belt, said that the successive state Governments had enhanced the tax and excise items sold in the Army and BSF canteens with the result prices of liquor in the canteens in Jammu and Kashmir were higher
