| Land compensation: 70 year old man struggling long battle for justice | | DC office delaying process, officials allege | | Early Times Report Rajouri, Aug 27- Running from pillar to post an old man from remote village of Thanamandi in Rajouri border district of Jammu and Kashmir is denied rent of land used by army for the last 14 years. The compensation of Majid Khan’s walnut trees amounting to Rs 10 lakh is pending in the cup boards of District Development Commissioner office Rajouri. Counting the days of his life, the attitude of government and army is killing him twice a day, the old man narrated. He said that during the year 1996, 63 Brigade of Army occupied 23 Kanal and 17 Marlas land near police station Thanamandi to install their camp on it. The land belongs to one Abdul Majid Khan, father of 5 sons and 3 daughters. The land was a lone source of income of the family. Sixty three walnut trees on this land were the only source of income of this 70 year old man. “I was living joyful days with good income from this land but all of sudden in 1996 he was forced to come on road. Presently he is living distressful life”, he added. Narrating the tale of his vows, Khan said that at the time of occupation of land, he was given assurance of rent and compensation of trees but 14 years have passed and he got not even a penny. “I am struggling for my rights for the last 14 years but all in vain as I was only mislead and no body is coming to my rescue”, he said adding that after occupying the land, army razed 31 walnut trees and dug trenches and bunkers on the land make it purely incapable for agriculture use forever. 63 Brigade of army was meanwhile shifted to other place and 13 Rashtriya Rifles was deputed to the area. “I approached army but neither 63 brigade nor 13 RR did justice with me”, he said adding that though army has handed over the land to him in 2005 but the condition of the land is not favorable to continue agricultural activities on it. “It is totally damaged and unfit for agricultural purpose”.
