| Crop insurance scheme to be introduced from ensuing Rabi season | | | Early Times Report Jammu, August 27 The state government is contemplating to introduce crop insurance upto the village level from the ensuing Rabi crop season. This was informed by the Minister for Agriculture, G H Mir who claimed since the Kharif season was about to end we have start the crop insurance scheme from the ensuing Rabi season Asked whether for introduction of the crop insurance scheme amendment to the state constitution was required Mir said that "we will issue a simple notification which was enough to bring farmers under the next of crop insurance scheme.’ He said that first of all the Government will have to decide which crops in the Rabi season and which in the Kharif season were to be brought under crop insurance scheme. In reply to another question he said that one general insurance company has been approached and the company has agreed to provide insurance cover to the farmers' crops. Mir claimed crop insurance is very much needed because of the vagaries of weather in the border state adding that there are areas where the crops would get destroyed because of drought and there were belts where the crops suffered damage owing to heavy rain, snow, and hailstorm. Mir stated that once the crops came under insurance cover there was no need for the Government to pay relief. He added that for distribution of calamity relief fund only those farmers were entitled to it if the extent of damage to their crops was over 50 per cent. But no such clause is there in case of crop insurance scheme.
