| One billion people to go hungry this year | | | Agencies New Delhi, Aug 27 : The worldwide recessionary trend will send 53 million more people into the poverty net and over a billion would go 'chornically hungry' this year as per World Bank's estimates. Quoting this grim forecast borne out of nine per cent decline in the global trade as projected by World Trade Organisation (WTO) and 11 per cent by World Bank, Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma today said, ''Fortunately, India has not been affected to the same extent as other economies of the world.'' He, however, said Indian exports too have suffered a decline in the last ten months due to contraction in demand in its traditional overseas markets, adding protectionist measures adopted by some countries have aggravated the problem. Sounding not optimistic, he said even though economists are talking of emergence of 'green shoots'(indicating recovery), ''I remain hesitant to hazard a guess on the nature and extent of this recovery.'' ''This year we are witnessing one of the most severe global recessions in the post-war period and countries across the world have been affected in varying degrees. Major econmic indicators of industrial production, trade capital flows, unemployment, per capita investment and consumption have taken a hit,'' the Minister said. Xxxxx
