| Shopian case hearing adjourned till Monday | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Aug 28: The Jammu and Kashmir High Court today adjourned the hearing till Monday on the bail applications of two police officers, arrested for allegedly destroying the evidence in the double rape and murder at Shopian in May this year. Then Superintendent of Police (SP) Shopian Javid Iqbal Matoo and his deputy Rohit Baskotra had filed a criminal revision petition before the High Court after their bail applications were rejected by the Sessions Court, Shopian. Their counsel Aseem Mehrotra pleaded before the single bench comprising Justice Sunil Hali that since there was no material evidence against both the police officers, they should be released on bail. He informed the Court that there was no evidence which suggests their direct or indirect involvement in the crime. However, counsel for the state opposed the bail and said despite violence marks on the bodies of the two women, the police officers failed to register an FIR. However, an FIR was registered after six days of delay during which period vital evidence in the case had been destroyed. Justice Hali said the case will come up on Monday. One-man commission of inquiry headed by Justice (retd) Muzaffar Jan, appointed to probe the rape and murder, in its report said involvement of a state police agency could not be ruled out completely. Later, Matoo and Baskotra were arrested along with two other police officers on the direction of the High Court.
