| Crime branch cracks fraud at Sonamarg MVD checkpost | | | Early Times Report Srinagar Aug 29: Crime branch sleuths today arrested two officials of MVD department for misusing their official position by conferring illegal benefits to them and the truck owners thereby causing huge loss to the state exchequer. Police sources said that crime Branch Kashmir on receipt of specific information through a reliable source that large number of trucks loaded with essential commodities and other goods were being allowed to cross Sonamarg check post towards Kargil and Leh by the officers/ officials of the MVD Department in league with other concerned agencies on paying bribe by cash payment, as such, the Govt. officials were misusing their respective official positions for conferring illegal benefits to themselves and same to the truck owners and driving causing huge corresponding loss to the State exchequer. Acting on the information a team from Crime Branch Kashmir was deputed to Sonamarg check post on 24.08.2009. This team of officer intercepted as many as 46 trucks on the same day which had crossed the Sonamarg check post after routine check conducted by the MVD Officials and other concerned agencies. Out of 46 trucks, 34 were found over loaded to the extent of 90 quintals each. It may be pertinent to mention here that the permissible load for a truck to its destination for Kargil and Leh has been fixed at the rate of 08 tones, however, the intercepted vehicles are were found loaded with more than 08 tones of goods in disregard to the system/law devised by the authorities. The truck were checked by the Crime Branch officers in presence of Executive Magistrate and analysis was made by the investigators which unfurled that by allowing the over loaded trucks to ply towards Kargil and Leh the concerned officials had caused an approximate loss of Rs.3.20,000/- to the State exchequer by not performing their lawful duties for imposing the fine upon the drivers of 34 over loaded trucks. The analysis arrived at further reveals that a loss of one crore rupees per month was being inflicted upon the State exchequer as per the average of 34 over loaded trucks by not imposing fine upon these by the MVD Officials. The investigating agency is also probing the aspect of payment of commercial taxes/ toll taxes with respect to the trucks carrying goods to Kargil and Leh and the investigating agency is expected to have some stunning disclosures during further investigation. So far two persons namely Ab. Qayoom Reshi son of Late Gh. Ahmad Reshi resident of Soura Srinagar, Sr. Assistant and Gh. Mohammad Ahanger son of Late Ab. Rehman Ahanger resident of Natipora Srinagar, Sr. Assistant have been arrested while the hunt is on to nab Abdul Qayoom Mir son of Mohammad Shafi Mir resident of Zafran colony Sampora, Jr. Inspector MVD Sonamarg Check Post who is absconding till date. More arrests are expected in the case.
