| Govt admits delay in GCET Jammu | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, AUGUST 29 – The Minister for Higher Education, Mr. Abdul Gani Malik today said that the government is committed to make Government College of Engineering and Technology (GCET), Jammu fully functional from the next academic session. He said the government of India has approved 18 Polytechnics in all the districts where such institutions have not so far been established. One Polytechnic shall also be established in the district Udhampur during the 11th Five Year Plan. Replying to a question of Mr. Bhalwant Singh Mankotia in the House today, the Minister said that the government college of Engineering and Technology was established in the year 1994. The recruitment Rules for Gazetted Staff of GCET are under preparation. As and when these are finally notified, the promotion can be effected. The Minister further said that 40 faculty members joined the college since 1994 out of them 12 have left the job as they have preferred other jobs/assignments.
Mr. Malik said the post of Principal, GCET, Jammu has been since referred to PSC, the selection to which is yet awaited. The PSC is being requested to speed up the process of selection, he added.
The Minister further told to the House that construction work of GCET, Jammu was started in 1998-99 and the total number of blocks proposed to be constructed for different branches including hostel building and administrative block and Principal Quarters is 20. He said the total expenditure incurred for completion of construction work of Phase-I is Rs. 2021 lakh and estimated cost of Phase-II of GCET is Rs. 3890 lakh.
The Minister said that 37 laboratories are available in the new and old campus, however, the practical training for electrical machine are conducted in government polytechnic and MBS College of Engineering and Technology.
